A Stunning Discovery

While I couldn't stand my desktop anymore to bear with for Trainz, I have since gone back to it since it seems to me that I can build routes without having to look at this:

After reinstalling TS12 on my laptop and placing it on 49222 I'm still seeing residual effects although not to this extent however. I have SP1 on my desktop. While I haven't tested it out with multiple trees and textures, I have placed some textures down and it's looking much better than before. I wonder if overclocking my laptop had something to do with this. I have the option of going to Samsung GeForce GT640M or Intel HD Graphics 4000. My desktop is NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS. It also has a 2.6GHz compared to only 2.4GHz on my laptop. So the only difference is the ram and C Drive Memory. Everything else is basically better on my desktop. So I'm dissapointed that SP1 runs better on my desktop than on my laptop. I'll never get Samsung again.

Why wouldn't it run better on a computer with better specs? I don't understand the discovery?

Well the graphics card is integrated. I also put it on overclock which might have jacked it up. Plus the processor speed is .2 GHz faster than my laptop.

I'm not sure what you mean by having "the option of going to Samsung GeForce GT640M or Intel HD Graphics 4000." Do you mean you have both available for video output in your lappie and are still getting worse performance than your ancient desktop with a 8400GS? If so, it shouldn't be a surprise; mobile devices use heavily de-rated components, even ones that might bear similar names to desktop parts. Or, is your concern that you're using integrated graphics and getting worse performance? It's well-established that Trainz gets far better performance with a discrete graphics card versus integrated graphics; even one as ancient as an 8400GS could possibly be able to do better than integrated. There's no mystery here. As for OCing, sure, it could hurt performance if the CPU has to throttle due to heat; in fact, I really don't think OCing a laptop is advisable as most can barely keep temperatures under control even under normal clock speeds and operating circumstances - and many can't even then. It's something I've never tried since, to me, that would be like trying to steer a car with your feet: You might be able to do it, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea*.

*FYI, I was using that metaphor long before Chris Rock...

Actually I think Sherriff Buford T. Justice was using it before Chris Rock.

My desktop actually had, for the most part, superior specs despite not having the same amount of RAM(4GB) compared to 8 GB of RAM on my laptop. The graphics card isn't as good at GT640M as is my 8400GS driver. I didn't think that my desktop would be able to handle SP1 and it's done a better job than my laptop. So that's the big surprise.

Well, if you want to go down that path, here's a kicker: I downloaded the installation files again (digital version) and when I finished, put them on DVD. Went ahead and installed it. And when that was done, sure enough, it was at 61388 version, no further patching needed. Seems a bit smoother/snappy for some reason now, also. I didn't put the trainzoptions.txt back in or tweak the settings much.
