A new turntable

Hi all,, I am wanting to install a turntable that only turns the loco round in the opposite direction.
Could someone please advise a turntable that will fill my needs and what do I have to do to set it up.
That's easy for someone that knows how, please.

Most turntables are associated with roundhouses in Trainz so my guess is there probably aren't very many stand alone turntables.

However I can't imagine that the AJS turntable kit (or is it roundhouse kit, lol) can't make what you need. You might look into it.

A turntable that has 16 track leads, will require you hitting the turntable move/rotate arrow with the mouse button, 16 times to make a 180 degree revolution.

Wht kind of turntable do you need ? A huge 125' or a smaller one, modern, or old time ?

Hello casel.

There are several stand-alone turntables on the DLS.

Search the word Turntable and you’ll find quite a few. Tick all of the boxes for your version and below for the maximum number of returns.

In game you’ll find them in the Objects menu (f3).

Select and place your turntable on the baseboard. Here, there are three random ones I happen to have.

Next, select the Track menu (f4). Note that the spline circles now show at each end of the revolving turntable bridge. This is where you need to connect your tracks. The turntables shown at the top and left are single track objects and it’s probably worth using one of these to start with. The one on the right is more complex, allowing several tracks to be connected. You don’t need to use them all, but the multitude of connection points do allow tracks to be aligned at more precise angles (for us fussy types who try to emulate the real world!)

Here’s one of the single track versions with the tracks connected up on each side.

This is how it looks in driver. Just float your cursor over the turntable and click on one of the two arrows (they are both red to start with). You can choose to go clockwise, or anti clockwise and the arrow will turn green to indicate the direction of your choice and the bridge will rotate. The arrows will disappear if you move your cursor away from the turntable, but the bridge will continue to rotate until it reaches the next piece of connected track. It will then stop, perfectly aligned with your track and you can then drive off your reversed loco.

Happy rotating!

Everything you read above is quite exact and true. But here is a nuisance: Your turntable works perfect, only that some engines, when over it, blank the arrows, and at some point, you can't see them! and the engine sits there unable to move. You hover the cursor to above, far, near and any angle, and it doesn't work. Maybe this has something to do with an engine arriving near a set of points, and the arrows can't be seen unless you move the camera to another angle. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Hi Guys,,,,,Thanks very much indeed,, but how do I tell a loco to go on a turntable and turn using AI.
Please

@Ilebrez

I’ve never been able to “lose” the turntable direction arrows in Driver. Using the mousewheel to zoom in, and clicking RMB to light up the arrows, always seem to work for me.

@casel

You can get the loco to go onto the turntable and stop on the bridge by laying a track mark on the small fixed stub of track at the perimeter of the turntable asset.

However, to get it to turn, I think you will need an extra command. For TRS2006 you could try MoveTurntable <kuid2:131896:180156:1> which is on the DLS.

There’s an old forum thread here which gives details on how it’s done (see post #2).

Edit: Here's a .pdf file link with further details. It took a while to download for me, so if it's slow be patient! http://www.trains.0catch.com/Installing a Turntable and Operating it Under AI Control.pdf

I often get that problem with the arrows dissapearing.
If the loco is short enough you can move it on the turntable to get to the arrow.
The other option I use is to multiple click on the arrow so it travels past the problem spot.
Cheers,
Mike

Having made a number of turntables I found out why its sometimes difficult to see the arrows or worse get them to work.

I made a series of broad gauge turntables which were very small in diameter. It was quite difficult to make them work as the arrows kept disappearing. I finally realized the very small diameter was the problem so I placed a much larger diameter part below the bottom of the pits bottom and the problem went away. Apparently the arrows need to be over a part of the turntable pit to either easily be seen, be seen, or work at all.

So if your making a small one it might be necessary to put a larger diameter part hidden underground for ease of use.

Thanks to all of you,,,I think you have answered all the questions between you.
I cant see me having any problems now,, or shouldn't have, love this forum.

Hi Casel..just a small point that you might want to consider is to change the radius of the trackmark on the turntable. It will make getting your engine to stop in just the right spot a lot easier. something like 0.1 usually works fine. You can then move the track mark back and forth until you get the engine dead centre on the turntable.
Regards Doug

I place 3 rotating trackside cameras ... one inside the roundhouse at low level view ... another @ 20m distant the center of the turntable low to the ground ... and a 3rd camera @ 40m distant the turntable on its exit lead, and it gives a good show of the turntable operations.

Thanks again,,,But I don't believe this, I think I have done everything right but,,,,,,,,,,,,
Let me explain, I decided to use the garsdale turntable as it has just the 2 tracks, one for on and and the the same line for off, but in my case, just turn it round and drive off the same way it came on.
I used the input table and it reads exactly thus: turntable,Forest_Turntable,2stops
I put a trackmark to make the loco stop in the middle and its called ,,,,table1
So the drivers instuctions read :drive to trackmark table1,,,,wait 10 secs,,,,,MOVE TABLE FOREST_TABLE to number next ,,goto trackmark passby.
So the loco goes to the middle ,waits 10 secs and does nothing, ,,,,it clicks as though it is going to but stays where it is, although I can click on the green arrow and it will go
round.
Can someone help me please, I have been trying for hours.

Driving with AI control can be problematic ... real train drivers do not have AI ... So drive manually is the best way ... just like on the prototype

Well I have just gone to the back of the class,,,,,,
What I hadn't done was name the turntable object to Forest_Table and so the input table was looking
for a turntable that wasn't there,
I do it with stations ,so how did I forget to do it with this, I nearly felt too embarrassed to tell you but I thought it only fair
to do so, and now I do feel a clod.
Thanks all again,,,,,,,anybody like to buy trainz ,hardly used, LOL
