A couple of questions regarding FPS and TurfFX

I have a new computer which is really nice that replaced my old one that the mother board gave out on. Its hopefully going to allow me to get past old problems of not being able to accomplish what I wanted to do on route building. By the way this is like the 3rd computer I have bought with Trainz in mind! :'(

Anyway enough background...here are my questions.

  1. I downloaded the old program FRAPs to be able to have the FPS showing while using Trainz. It just stays at 30 FPS. Never goes over 30. Will go under if I do something like bulk asset replacement for a few seconds but never over. Have I accidently got some setting checked off to cap the FPS?
  2. When using TurfFX in previous versions of Trainz I had discovered how to keep the grass from spreading from the selected grid I was placing it in. Let me get the vegetation right up to the edge of the ballast on the tracks. I can't repeat that old trick and keep playing with the settings/options but have not hit on it. Even looked at Videos on youtube, Any advice?

Thanks.

Congratulations on your new computer. I hope it serves you well for a long number of years.

There's a frame-limit in TRS2019 and TANE. At the Launcher, uncheck full screen option under Trainz Settings uncheck Fullscreen, and change the Vertical Sync to none.

I have difficulties with Turf-FX placement as well. Setting the cursor to the smallest size that works helps, and there's also the fill function that works by selecting the grid area that helps as well but it's not perfect.

Also now that Vsync Full should provide smoother performance than None is you are getting s steady 60fps.

John and Tony, thanks for the answers. I will try both of your solutions on the FPS. John on the TurfFX I do believe that we can't quite reach the same precision on grass spreading out a bit more than in Tane. But its not a deal killer.

Appreciate the help and quick answers!

It is my understanding that a new feature in Trainz Plus is the ability to limit Turf-FX to a specific texture according to a Approach Medium video. Since I don't rent Trainz through the Plus subscription I can't verify this feature is still present. Of course, Trainz Plus is just early access or alpha version of the next version of Trainz with features coming and in some cases going all the time.

The Turf-FX to a texture is near the end of the video and is a third tip he shows.

Yes... you can apply grass to a specific texture.....I do it all the time. Makes life real easy.

Referring to @netjam's frame rate (FPS) question, I am slightly confused by the contradictory advice given by two respected and ever helpful forum members.

@JCitron says change Vertical Sync to none;
@Tony_Hilliam says change Vertical Sync to full, if I understand his somewhat garbled sentence correctly (no offence - I know you're a busy man, Tony).

So what should one do to optimize the frame rate: None or Full (and relaunch game, of course)?

You need to relaunch regardless. It depends upon your video card. An older video card will require that the framerate be locked while a GTX1080 TI and up runs well with the v-sync set to none. My suggestion/recommendation is to try both and see which one works for you.

I tried the Full option last night. Very high frame rates even down in a valley with speed trees all over the surrounding mountains. 50 to 60 FPS. Will try the None option next!

I am going to check out the texture being applied with TurfFX thanks guys!

Need a bit more help!

I'm using Trainz here on the weekend and I am trying to conquer adding TurfFX grass to a texture. I for some reason can't grab the grass from the topology tab and move it over to the Assets To Update box. I have looked at the before mentioned Approach Medium video, I also have been searching for other vids and looking at the wiki. Nothing seems to help me. Gotta be something simple, advice as always would be greatly appreciated.

Screenshot shows where I'm stuck at. In this case I am trying to apply the Wheat TurfFX effect layer to a Field texture. But doing grasses does not work either.

Thanks,
