Ok - I'll ask the dumb question: Where is that steam coming from?

Cylinder cocks are usually at the rear of the cylinders and very close to the bottom so they can get any water out that may have condensed from the steam. This steam looks be coming from the front, closer towards the centerline of the engine, and at lot larger rate then what I've seen from cylinder cocks.

The steam is coming out of the open cylinders. They are opening the throttle but with nothing in there to push against, it just escapes.

I'd like to see a certain F7B in the background make a comeback.

I'd like to provide some really interesting info about that F7B:
You can't see it, but that's the famous F7B used by the coal company at the end of the Clinchfield's Hyasi branch. Unfortunately, it and an ex-CSX F7A are privately owned. I'd like to see them painted in Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis paint scheme. It has a would be more appropriate than the Clinchfield paint scheme given that the Clinchfield never made it to Chattanooga.

From my understanding opening the regulator to achieve that feat is quite common in the restoration process. Firstly it tests that the regulator is admitting steam into the cylinders, its testing that the feed pipes to the cylinders from the smokebox are working as they should, and, as an added bonus, clears out all the delievery tubes and pipes of dirt and grime. ANd of course it can make for a stunning effect. Having seen this happen in person I can also say it can be murder on the unprotected ears.

One such example. Steamrail Victoria's A2 986 underwent her first steaming tests this year after over 50 years of lifelessness. She is slowly making progress with hopes of a mainline return in the coming years.

Cheers

I think it's very cool seeing an old steam locomotive wake from a long sleep with a hot fire in her belly and a head of steam building in it's boiler :Y:.

How close do you think She is to coming back?

Picture taken July 11th, 2014. I'm estimating she'll be done late 2014 or early 2015.

Well all the mainline excursions for this fall have been canceled and there's nothing on their website about mainline excursions during Railfest. However, they are doing a special "Railfest" version of the Chickamauga Turn.
