2nd TS12 install questions

..........
Good morning All;

Man, I finally got my Trainz pc back from the shop. Everything is completely different. They were going to replace 2 HDs. One was the "Factory Image" drive, which was named (I think) drive E. I cannot see this anywhere. Anyway, TS12 seems to be intact and my route that I've been working on seems OK, although I have not tried editing it yet.

I want to leave my Trainz pc off line, install my other copy of TS12 (new, never used) on THIS pc and use it to download items from the DLS and then copy them over to my Trainz pc.

Will I be able to use my same user name, password, and user I.D. on the new install?

Will I need to get another FCT?

Thanks guys, cheers.......Rick

Boy, I have got to try to remember how I had my pc set up. I have the same amount of free space on my C drive. There used to be 2 HDs, C and the Factory Image drive. Now it's showing C and my External HD. At least Trainz seems OK. After being in the shop a few of times, weekly phone calls, those guys trying various things to get the 2, or most likely 1 new HD installed, I'm totally confused. I should have stayed out of the shop, now I am finding it very hard to not buy a fancy gamer, 27" monitor, may as well get those fancy speakers, and what the heck, a new TV!:udrool:

Yes, your ID and password refer to you, not a specific instance of Trainz. Glance through the forums and see the station stops next to the poster's name, more than 1 Trainz, same user name, password. By the way, you can legally install the same copy of Trainz as many times as you like, on as many PC's as you like. Most people (well, a lot anyway), keep 2 cpoies, 1 for backup, and possibly a third vanilla version to check routes for upload to the DLS. What I'm trying to say, you don't need to pay for 2 copies, just install the same one twice.

Your FCT applies to you, and to all copies of Trainz you own. You only need 1 bought and activated at a time.

Ken

Rick, regarding your hard drive issue, try entering BIOS setup on starting (on mine, it's press <DEL> on the num pad, but it will tell you on the splash screen), and see how many hard drives are listed. If one is listed there which is not seen by Windows, it needs formatting. You'll need a partition manager tool - a good free one is EASUS Partition Manager (Google is your friend, here), DL that and partition the ghost HDD. That's if in fact, you have a second drive - if a shop was setting it up for you, I would have thought they would have formatted it on install.

Anyway, regards and good luck,

Ken

Wonder if it was actually originally 1 hard drive in two partitions? one being the factory restore partition, which may still be there but hidden.

Hi Fellas; I'm going to have to check into this a little later. For now here's all I really know: I have a box with the 2 old HDs. There is only 1 HD listed. I THINK what I have been told is that they could not make it work with 2 HDs, so they were putting everything on 1 HD. I said I was concerned that there was no way it all would "fit" on 1 HD. "No worries", they said. I still have the same "free space" on the C drive. I have a couple of folders on my desktop, Rick's old files, and a couple of others. I really cannot stand having anything I do not need on my pc, but I will carefully look at the folders before I get rid of anything. The "missing" drive is the Factory Image drive, which was basically full, and I never touched it. I was even afraid to defrag it. At the moment I'm installing tree splines, and there seems to be no problem, so far. I'm having a hard time getting back into the grove ( it's too nice to be in the house). I'll work on the trees for awhile, save it, and have a look at things. I just have to get everything back to the way it was. Lots of changes were made, like the side bar was showing, user control was turned on, some new files added, etc. I never knew much about computers, but in the last month or so, while it was in the shop, I forget even that little bit of knowledge. I just have to get myself in the mood to start trying to figure it all out. I'm sure it will all turn out OK. My biggest problem at the moment is that I cannot get the idea of buying a gaming pc out of my head, even though my Trainz pc has been running Trainz really well. A tax refund is on the way, and Rick wants (does not need) a new toy! OK, going to finish putting in a few trees, and have a look at this BIOS thing. I'll most likely be back with more questions.

Thanks guys, cheers....Rick

PS I was a hopeless Trainz addict, putting in 10 hour plus days working on the route. Now, after my forced rehab, I find it really hard to get going again.

Good day guys;

Are you ready to dumb things down a little....OK, a great amount would be more like it. My Trainz computer is working fine. I have taken it off line, installed TS12 on this pc, and can download items from the DLS and transfer them to the Trainz pc. Thanks Ken, I used the same copy of TS12.

About the bios thing: I had a look at this and 2 HDs are there. The thing is, as far as I can tell, they are 2 different type of HDs. I believe one of them must be my external HD. Here's what I see when I go to the start menu, computer. Hard Disk Drives (2)....Local Drive (C)......Expansion Drive (I). No sign of Factory Image, which used to be there. Below this is an area that shows "Devices with removable storage (5)". I checked all these and nothing there, just asks to put in a disk. This is the area where Expansion Drive (I) used to be located, but with a different name.

Is it possible that they've done away with "Factory Image"? How did my external HD go from Devices with removable storage to hard disk drives?

I've run CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, and Defraggler, in that order. With Defraggler there is an item called "pagefile.sys". I've never notice this before, most likely because there were no fragmented files in it. Looking at it, it seems very large to me. Looks like this: size "8,694,09...". Path "C:\". That is just how they look. I think there is one fragmented file in there. I could usual have 0 fragmented files, 0 total fragments and 0% fragmentation. Now because of "pagefile.sys" I have 12% fragmentation. Maybe it's not a big deal, but I always like to see all 3 zeros. I've tried to look into it online, and as usual, some say here's how to defrag it, and others say leave it alone. What do you guys think? Is it possible that this has something to do with "Factory Image"?

Well, I hope you can understand my less than layman lingo. The pc seems to be working well, except I HATE that darn 12% fragmentation. Thanks guys, Let me know what you think about this.

Cheers.....Rick

Pagefile.sys is the Windows paging file. A defrag tool that run outside Windows is needed if this file is a problem. One free tool I've used for this is UltraDefrag, although Microsoft do a tool if you are using Windows XP called PageDefrag.

Shane

Hello there, Shane;

I'll give that UltraDefrag a go a little later. So, you think it's OK to defrag that file? No problems yet, I just don't like seeing that I have any fragmented files.

Thanks again for all the help you have given me since I arrived here!
Cheers.....Rick

I've not had any issues after defragmenting said file. Be aware though that boot-time defragmenting is not turned on by default - you will need to click the toolbar button with C:/ on it to activate the feature, then do the same to turn it off after you have done the restart.

Shane

OK, Thanks, I just downloaded UltraDefrag, I'll follow the above info and try it after supper.

Cheers.........Rick

Hi guys;

Shane thanks for your help. I could not get UltraDefrag to work (I'm sure it's me), but thanks to you, I found that Defraggler had a boot time option. I had no idea of this boot time defrag option before you told me about it. Got my 3 zeros back again! Thanks so much! I just can't stand having any fragmentation!

I should have put this in the Parts and Labour Forum, I suppose, but it was a kind of 2 part question to begin with. I finally phoned the shop to ask what happened to my Factory Image drive. I know now that I only have 1 drive (used to be 2). They said something about a "generic factory image drive". I'm not totally sure what that means, but at least I know what happened to that drive.

I'm very curious about this: My pc seems to recognize my external HD as a kind of "built in HD". Before I took the pc to the shop the external HD was in with "Devices with Removable Storage". It's a 2TB. I use it as one of my back ups for all Trainz related stuff. I even have all of the TS12 install (every file)backed up on it. I'm going to try to run TS12 from it and see if it works. I'm also thinking of getting another external HD to back up the fist one. If TS12 works on the external HD, that would be great. It would be a long time before I ran out of space.

Cheers, have a great day to all who claim to have a little Irish blood in us......Rick

Rick,

When I first started with Trainz on my old PC (now gone to the great recycling plant in the sky), I ran 2009 & 2010 off and external HDD (WD Elements 2TB), and it ran fine on a USB2 connection. A little stuttering, but nothing game breaking - then again, I had an old graphisc card (GeForce 9400, I think) and 4GB RAM. As I say, ran OK.

Regards,

Ken

Hey Thanks Ken; I tried it a couple of hours ago. I was disappointed because the first thing I noticed was that there were no switch stands. Then it struck me that all I did was copy all the files from TS12, I did not really install it on the external HD. I ran it from the Application inside The TS12 folder.

I'm going to actually try to install it on the external HD tomorrow. Can I do it this way: Change the name of the first install on the C drive, then install a second copy of TS12 onto the external HD? If that works, I'll copy the files from the C drive copy to the external HD? It may not be needed, but I have 395.2 GB left on the C drive and I'm only about halfway through my route. Lots of "super detailing" to do, also. All that extra free space on the external HD sure looks inviting!

Thanks again, Cheers.....Rick

Rick, can I suggest that you do just that with the exception of not changing the names of the installs. Instead, just R-click on the desktop shortcuts and rename the one on the external drive to something like "TS12 Backup". Leave the original as it is - you'll know by the shortcut names. That way, you'll always know which is which without buggering anything in the process. Although I'm surprised just copying across didn't work.

Regards,

Ken

Thanks, Ken:

Just getting started today, had a bunch of chores to do. OK, I'll give that a go. With the "non working" install, all I did was copy all the files in the TS12 folder. There was no icon or anyway way to start it, (Im pretty sure I could have made some kind of short cut) other than go into the files and use the app file. I did not spend much time looking at it. I could hear those dang cows, looked like the scenery was all there, but not a switch stand in sight. I'll take a look at it before I get rid of it. Thanks for your advice Ken. Hope the wife doesn't find anything else for me to do today.

Cheers.....Rick

That did the trick, Thanks Ken, cheers
