Finally got up-to-date with Trainz 2010 this holiday, and while most of it is quite familiar, it is still different enough from '06 to warrant a comparison:
First thing I want to critique is one I have seen a LOT of hoorays and boos: Speedtree. Initial impressions for me are mixed. I love the way the trees move in the breeze, and the detail up close is amazing. But oh my, from a distance, those same trees look blockier than a Lego layout!
Content Updates...great idea, to be able to update assets without having to fire up Content Manager. Unfortunately, I have only managed to update two of 191 thanks to a week-long "server full" message. So enthusiasm over this feature is curbed until the DLS mess is cleaned up.
Making junctions: why is this so much more difficult in '10 than in UTC or '06? I have had to either used fixed track (which I NEVER did in the two predecessors) or change the track from the default (the less-than-breathtaking but low-poly 1 track wood US).
I was delightfully surprised at the high number of '04/06 assets I was able to import into 2010. I assume assets in red in Surveyor are those with errors or warnings? However, I was also negatively suprised at the number of built-in assets that have yellow or red ! in CM.
One error that has cropped up in imported rolling stock that I don't know how to fix are those whose ARN (auto numbering) isn't working. Is there a simple trick to getting these cars numbered properly?
LOVE the ways some of the trees change with the calendar. That is cool.
The road traffic is much improved. These drivers finally use headlights at night, and no more hovercraft! They actually touch the ground, which helps explain why the tire dealer in Woodburn is so busy!
Surveyor is different. What happened to the categories and location tabs? I DO like the multiple filters available in the search function, but it's a bit more time consuming than simply changing tabs if all you want to look at is say, Buildings.
And what happened to the Favorites pallette in the ground texture section? Is it hiding? That is the one thing about '06 I truly miss in '10.
I was looking forward to be able to access the DLS again after losing that right with '06. But I have been unable to get a single thing since the day after Christmas, and only one small asset thru CM. I hope that is a temporary glitch that will be solved when Auran gets back from their vacation.
All in all, I am looking forward to working in TS2010 in the coming months. If someone can help me fix my broken ARN cars, I might just be a happy Trainzer.
