A long time ago, when I first got 2009, the simulator crashed as soon as I punched the start button. I, too, thought that the simulator was faulty.
After some experimenting I discovered that another application on my computer was hogging all the RAM, ergo, 2009 could not run. I removed the offending application and 2009 runs purrrfectly.
So, if you are one who has problems with 2009 behavior, chances are that some other application is interfering.
