Good news to others without a fast computer. The 2009 Beta runs difficult maps much better. It has a "compatibility mode" that is really great. I found that if I set view distance to the minumum, which is now 1000 meters, it slices through towns the previous versions used to hang on.
Some of it could be my new fast hard drive loading assets faster, but not all of it.
I downloaded Kauai 2008 and can run through it smoothly that way. No missing textures, too. No impulse to start editing buildings and fences out.
Also the graphics engine is better -- I don't need to use any anistropic filtering any more.
I'm running opengl and haven't tested directx yet -- dx was very slow for me in Trainz Classics.
If I turn off compatibility mode it stutters terribly in Kauai -- a Trainz 2004 map.
