1959 Boston North Station bombing... A forgotton tragedy.

In 1959 a bomb was placed in one of the coin-operated lockers on the second-floor of North Station. This floor was connected to the long gone Metropolitan Transit Authorities (MTA) Boston Elevated station. The bomber called the switchboard prior to the blast and said it was for Patrick McGuiness, the then president of the Boston and Maine. McGuiness and his thugs ruined the B&M just like they had done to the New Haven first.

Boy, I had forgotten completely about this. I was in college at the time, but would have left Boston to go home for the summer and I guess it didn't get much attention locally where I was.

I read about this just recently. With today's news on things like this, a bombing of this magnitude would have made the national headlines complete with memorials, and new recaps. From what I could see in the article, the hate was directed towards McGuiness, who by this time had destroyed the B&M pretty much.

What school did you go to? My parents went to the MFA around the same time where they met. Dad graduated in 1958-59.

33 Bombs before he was captured, talk about a low life. It's so sad that all that happened and barely anybody knew about it until now, that's like the equivalent of 9/11 for the mid 1900's (WWI and WWII were much bigger).

Harvard College '61, John. That summer I was working as a construction laborer shoveling dirt and brick in NJ. Had a new GF too, so maybe that is why I wasn't paying too much attention to bombs in Boston. (Unlike today when the media is indulging in an orgy of celebration like vultures on a road killed deer.)

Wow...That's when I was born! I agree so much gets over indulged in the media today, and I'm sure that must've been the reason for not paying attention.
