Wan't there crossing bells in the 1940s? I know we have them today obviously but I was playing a game called Locomotion back when I got it in 2005 and the lights were available starting in 1940.

Oh and are there any textures of farms and irrigation ditches I'm using for this route? The links:http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?86780-Eastland-Rocket

Exact name is Chris Sawyer's Locomotion.

Sure of course I don't see why not consider there were wig wags which had flashing lights and were around well before 1940s.

If I remember right, the old "Banjo" crossing signals had warning bells, and they came around in the...late '30's? That sounds right, but I'm not sure. Wig-Wags were certainly around in the '40's, but I don't think they came into real widespread use until the 1950's.

Note, don't take this to heart. I think the above is right, but I can't be certain, and I don't have any of the old refrence books I have in front of me. Hopefully someone more knoweldgeable that me will come along.

God intended steam engines to be greasy, grimy, and dirty...get that tourist railroads?:o

God had nowt to do with it, British engineers designed the steam engine, and they wouldn't have decided on
a livery for thier loco's if they wanted them covered in filth. Mechanical things work better & last longer if they
are kept clean & maintained. :p

<snip> ...but I don't think they came into real widespread use until the 1950's.

According to the Wikipedia article on wigwags, they were rendered obsolete for new installations in 1949, and production of new signals was stopped, although production of replacement parts continued until 1960.

I've played Chris Sawyer's Locomotion before, and it's a good game. I wouldn't consider it a reliable source for historical facts like the dates that stuff was introduced or discontinued on, though. My 2 cents.

Zachary

If you lik banjo's and wig wags ... use em' ...I probably will add some to my route ... I like kitbashing and using unusual objects ... the end user can always take them out if they don't find them prototypical.
