How to build a gaming computer

I just got an email from Toms Hardware. They've posted a great article outlining, in good detail, how to build a computer. Worth a look! Darrel

Big Boy 4014 on the move

As you may be aware, Big Boy #4014 is being moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a 3-5 year rebuild. It stopped in Salt Lake City over the weekend. I was there Saturday; the crowds were huge! I'd conservatively estimate 3 - 4,000 just when I was there. Exciting stuff for steam lovers! Darrel

Great to see so many names here that I know after all these years. (By Greg Lane)

Wow! Great to hear from you, Greg! I've been enjoying Trainz for over 12 years now, and it never gets old...I DO, however ;). Thank you so much...and the whole Trainz community, for this wonderful virtual world. Best wishes... Darrel

    SSD Cache (SanDisk ReadyCache)

I just read this review over at [H]ard|OCP on the SanDisk 32gb SSD ReadyCache. Interesting idea...and affordable. Basic idea is to use a 32-gb SSD as high-speed cache for existing traditional hard disks. Simple installation without reinstalling Windows. Price is around $50. I was wondering if...

    First route: questions

Good morning/afternoon/evening, everyone! Even though I've been around for a while and love Trainzing, I've not had the time to create a route in Surveyor. Due to recent real-life changes, I now have lots of free time and desire to create small, model-railroad type routes. My question is...

    UP 844 in Ogden, Utah

Here's a photo from this morning's newspaper, the Standard-Examiner. Probably a staged shot, but pretty good picture nonetheless. I wasn't feeling well enough to see her, but I've seen her in years past. Good stuff! Darrel

    I went training this weekend...

Our local model RR club, Hostlers, had open houses this past weekend; there were six layouts. Pictures. Darrel

Golden Spike Anniversary at Promontory, Utah 5/10/2011

I just got back from an exciting day at Promontory, celebrating the Joining of the Rails. Pictures available at https://picasaweb.google.com/108827097296192336582/Promontory051011#. Even though it was a cold, rainy day there were about 1,000 fans in attendance. Darrel

    Upgrade options...

Well, I've got a little extra Christmas money to spend...$200 to be exact. So: in view of my current setup (in signature), what do you think would give me the best 'bang for the buck?' 1. Upgrade CPU to Phenom II 700 x4 @3.5ghz but overclocks easily to 4ghz. 2. Upgrade video card to Nvidia...

Road trip along the old Central Pacific grade

My friends Ron, Chuck and I just got back from a two-day trip through Eastern Nevada and Northern Utah. We are very interested in the building and history of the Transcontinental Railroad and, since we live right near it, we took some time exploring the old grade. We visited historic sites...

    Canned air is cheap...picture

In my 20+ years' experience with computers, I've never, ever seen anything this bad! It belongs to a coworker (who shall remain anonymous, but she's a cute redhead:). She said she needed a new power supply, so I ordered it for her & said I'd put it in for her. Her brother brought it in and I...

    Ending background programs and services

I just found a great free utility which ends nearly all of the various programs and services which run in the background. I used to use Enditall, but I lost it and now it's no longer free. SmartClose is a better alternative. As you may know, Windows (especially Vista) runs a lot of stuff behind...
