    Downloading speed is painfully slow at times

    I recall downloading the UMR for TS12 or TANE without a FCT. Took me 15 days back then, downloading a little over 100mb/day. If you are not in a rush (and why would you; it is a train simulator), just let it download in the background while you do other stuff. And yes, you can just play the game...
