My giant Irish nightmare

Firstly, I was building my Irish build project on TRS10 and when I got a new pc I transferred it to that however I couldn't download from the DLS so thought having got 2012 a while ago i would set that up and import the route. When i went into it to work on the thing i found giant problems as scores of things are gone. Every local station on NIreland Railways is gone including those I had spent time on. Over the border on Irish Rail the same thing. Altogether I have the 6 Northern routes to go over with stations fill in blank fields, literally hundreds of missing house and again scores of miles of broken white lines to remove. On top of that I spent literally hours straightening tracks that had bent out of place. Both Belfast and Dublin have lots of missing buildings and is a nightmare. Embankments for a great many miles gone and bridges as well all over the place.

I had thought I had done well completing the NIR then concentrated working north from Dublin and secnery stretches as far as Malahide and the compete Howth branch. My DART depot has gone as have my sheds at Belfast and what i had regarded as a reasonable job around Dublin and out of it now has me a bit put out. IOt will take me weeks off an on to work over the Irish lines and some 300 plus miles bit by bit on each north and south route. It would be so damn easy to dump it and the one thing that I am holding on to s that there is a couple of years work inbetween general life things.

The missing assets are still there ... and may be broken by TS12, needing repairs to each and every asset, and all its dependencies, config files.

How exactly did you import from 2010? if you used the import function, what happens is everything is changed to locally modified and generates all sorts of problems for items that had existing suppressed warnings, only visible by right click show errors and warnings, that were not fixed before importing.
One additional cause of missing items is forgetting you need contents of both Local and Original folders to ensure you have all the items, however everything that was original ends up in local if you import.

The safest way in my opinion, with a new install of TS12 is to copy the Local and Original folders from 2010 and replace the folders in TS12 then run a QDR. Note really need to do this before adding any assets or downloading anything or running TS12. There may well still be things that need fixing however it should not be anywhere near as bad as the problem you seem to have.
That way the items will still retain their "protected" status and only those items that were originally locally modified are flagged locally modified.

Alternatively you could delete the TS12 Local and original, Run a QDR to remove the items from the database and then replace with the 2010 ones and run a QDR again to add the 2010 assets, again they mostly retain their original as downloaded from the DLS status.

I've always upgraded by copying local and original plus QDR and have had very few problems.

I maybe didn't clarify this as i should have.

I had originally transferred the 2010 compete folder into the new machine but on realising I wasn't getting the chance to download items took the whole folder off and is on a portable hard drive (the actual route itself is also been copied separately) . Had thought of re-installing 2010 then putting my copy of the route into that but discovered my 2010 disc 1 was missing. After a bit of thought I thought I would install TRS2012 which was lying in a drawer (!). In due course I then imported just my route and got this monumental headache.

Not being even a moderate techy guy I have noted what you have said there cascaderailroad! I take it that means looking at all the items? If need to figure that one out in practice then would need to be looked at. Same with your advice as well clam1952. Now I have to muse on which direction I go. Having spent so long doing 8 routes on the Irish networks the thought of weeks reproducing every station, scores of miles of embankments, bridges, buildings is a nightmare. Being a large thing and so extensive I do not want after a couple of years off and on to let this go. Trying to figure which direction I should go with 2 lots of positive advice here.

Yea, looks like you got there in the end, was gonna say, if all you imported was the route, then yes, you would have to reinstall all the content from the 2010 copy, whether you get that from the 2010 copy or the DLS..... In a weird kind of way, I think you just Forrest Gump'ed your way into having a working Route once you donwload all the assets it needs. After that though, Clam's advice would have been the quicker less painful way of doing this, even though this process is a bit disjointed and definitely not obvious.

Hope everything works out for you,
Falcus

Haven't got there yet!

Can I just be clear Clam1952. I delete the Local and Original Folders in 2012 and transfer the similar ones I have in 2010 in place?

I had managed to get tiems downloaded but with 240 odd items that won't instal I am hopig your experience here is paramount.

Yes that's correct replace the local and originals with the 2010 ones and run a QDR.

Amusingly, I found the missing 2010 disk! But anyway my thanks for the confirmation there Malc. Back to it tonight!

Bobby

Hi Malc.

Did as you said and I have the whole big project back so thanks for that info. What i have noticed is that I have 5 unknown kuids, 4 broken, 2 missing and 194 on the DLS. Howver if I try to download thosemthey seem to have problems.

Apart from that info the routes all seem to be back where they were thankfully although there are places dotted along the various routes where patches of the colouring need to be pasted back in. However apart from the negatives I have my project back and it is an easy matter covering where the board shows up. Not sure what to do about those queries mentioned but means I can get on with this big Irish project again!

Again my grateful appreciation.

Bobby

Maybe someone could clarify something for me.

Now I have all my routes back that is a help. I do have a minor nusiance in that there are blotches on each of the 7 routes where the board shows through in places - a goodly number so it will take me well into next week to put field clours etc back in. It stretches out getting back to building but that is life.

What i am curious about in the main is as I mentioned in the previous message above. Even with the items on the DLS it doesn't seem to effect my overall project. I did try to download the items listed but they just get listed with the asterisk beside them to show they are problems. Is there anything I need to do? Meanwhile back to shading.

Hi Bobby - The unknown assets might have been superseded in TS12 by updated assets.

The missing patches of colour are caused by missing texture assets. Try to identify the kuids in TS10 and you will find that the unknown assets are your missing textures. Do this by "getting" the textures, reading their names and looking them up in Content Manager.

If this doesn't help then could you post the kuids of the unknowns and broken assets please.

Have you applied any patches to TS12? This is a vary debatable topic and you might prefer to leave it at the base version.

Best Regards

Trevor

Hello Trevor,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Not sure which ones amongst the list below might be my missing colours for 2012. They are the ones when I tried to download appeared as having problems. In the last couple of nights allocating time it has been a dashed drag filling in small and large patches dotted about everywhere. The Belfast-Londonderry route for example is over 90 miles and taken 2 nights and still not filled and I have another 5 in the North and now the lines done around Dublin north to Malahide and Howth town to sort with bits of boards showing too.

Well, Bobby, there are two roads forward, the high road and the low road.

The low road: Continue filling in the missing textures on those bonnie, bonnie banks.

The high road: Do everything in your power to get those missing assets into TS12. You could try the DLS black pages and download the items one-by one, or if you can get your TS10 installation working again, export the missing items to a cdp and import into TS12.

Whichever way you choose, you'll be in Scotlan' afore me.

Best Regards

Trevor

Racking my brains here, but could it be this is simply a function of the route getting too big/not enough memory to display the textures?

ISTR this happening at least twice in the past to me. Once back in TRS2006 but more recently in TS12 when a route I was building suddenly lost vast areas of terrain texture. On the latter occasions I recall my HD was almost full because I hadn't adjusted the number of asset backups Trainz takes from 7 to 1 and the disc was almost at capacity.

I had as you know lost my 2010 disk 1 hence my getting out the 2012 in a drawer and loading it into that after you're advice on fixing things. It was a great sigh of relief that all my work had appeared again. These continuous empty blobs everywhere along the routes is a drag and I haven't even finished one of the 6 in the NIR never mind the smaller gaps over the Border with the IR. Not sure what the 'Black DLS' is so you can enlighten me on that one. Both variations are a slow thing but it may be that the black thingy would be quicker. Just seeing the list appearing showing internal faults is something else! It is a drag being held back from my scenery building so do enlighten me as requested. I have added some 2012 patches and have another couple to download.Oh and by the way, I am taking a friend from Glasgow to visit Loch Lomond for an afternoon here from Glasgow so there you are!
Hello Vern.

Reckon that I must have about 300 miles north and south of Ireland and all the Ulster scenery as well as Dublin as far as Malahide and off the line to Howth. I am trying to look at the background issue and only have scnery from Dublin Connolly to Heston Stations on one side to date and the central city lines stretch to the outskirts but no further. It may be that one done anyone one who wants to extend to the west, south or south east will have a great start from the Dublin outskirts. When the Navan Branch is added that will be another nearly 20 miles or so I think. One has to stop somewhere and my original intention was just to do the NIR which is thankfully done and do Dublin, Howth and Navan as my furthest stretch

Now it is back to you Trevor so i can make up my mind of which road to traverse. Funnily I am taking a friend to a day trip to Loch Lomond shortly and that is easier than the decision I have to make!

The ambitious Glaswegian being an ambitious Caesar in Ireland (ambition, ete, etc).

Bobby

Hi Bobby - The "Black Pages: refers to the original DLS site: http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS.php.

At the top of the page you are looking at now there is a blue bar with tabs. The one marked "Download Station" takes you to a new site that replaces the old one.
I still prefer using the old site and here are instructions for using the old Black Pages:

You will need your username and password to access the site. Once logged on:

Tick all the boxes so as to select all versions of Trainz.
In the Text Search field, type the number of the missing kuid, such as 151900:500103.
Below that, click the KUID button.

Then click the word SEARCH at the bottom of the box. This should bring up the Bewuchs1 texture, being the German for "vegetation".

Now choose the middle button, Download Page.
On the window that then opens, choose the second option: Download (FTP)

Save this file to a folder that you have prepared beforehand to store all your downloaded cdp files.
Repeat the search for the other files using the appropriate kuid numbers.

When you have downloaded as many files as you want to, open Trainz: Content Manager, select File - Import Content, find the folder with your saved files and import the entire folder in one operation.

It is a slow process but easier that redrawing all the textures.

Hope you succeed in this endeavour.

Trevor

These are all built-in items. Do you have any DLC? With the recent server errors, some of my built-in assets were unavailable due to them being used in DLC routes such as the Settle and Carlisle and Murchison 2. When the server goes down, these items get locked out, breaking all routes where the assets are used, in the process.

So, before you panic, check again that your assets haven't reappeared after the DLS-server and DLC server updates.

John

It's okay John I got over the original panic of all my Irish stuff going bonkers! I don't have Settle or Murchison routes. Did download a couple of other general routes on the download side but have since got rid of them. Once I got it back following Trevor's advice, I just essentially had the texture gaps holding me back. Noted both of your suggestions and think as I am in 2012 now will have a go at the "black" idea as crawling all over the Emerald isle is a groan. Mind you it is more in NI as what is down south is not as extensive so less to do there in filling the "gaps."
