Mr Grumpy
Earlier this evening several of us were having a light hearted discussion about parts from a Ford Escort being used during the rebuilding of a main line steam locomotive.
The thread has now vanished, so to answer the question here you are.
On 8Fs the injectors are mounted under the footplate below the cab. The handles for the water valves are mounted under the crews seats. The water valves are part of each injector. Because the handles and valves are not in line a pair of basic universal joints were used. We used second hand joints from Ford Escort steering racks when we mounted the injectors on 48151. More than one fireman has commented on how easy it is to regulate the water supply on this loco, probably due to there being no play in the joints. Injectors replenish the water in the boiler. VERY important.
JB you WERE very close with the suggestion of a steering wheel. Well done!
