Discusses how the roads in the westward movement turned into railroads, starting with Boston and the Berkshires and working south all the way to Georgia. Complete with maps and 74 photographs and illustrations. Brigham was a professor of Geology at Colgate University and weaves geology into the story.

Yes, thank you for bringing this to my attention. This was exactly how Otto Mears built the RGS and the three railroads based out of Silverton. First he built a toll road which produced the money needed to build the railroads.

An excellent read. Stubborn is the theme of the day as tunnels and roads were constructed in "impossible" areas. A view of Northeast rail history.
