Let's talk trees

What are your favourite trees? Obviously we have the comprehensive 'st_rmm' set, but for just quickly plonking down something the looks and feels right I'm rather fond of 'Baumgruppe1'.

Any other suggestions?

For quick, good looking FPS friendly trees (non Speedtree), those by Malcolm, clam1952, take some beating.

I concur with Vern. Malc's trees are great billboards and also perform very well given what they are. Remember billboard trees need some extra processing in order to be displayed in your route unlike Speed Trees which make full use of your graphics card.

toxa_batoxa has a lot of seasonal stuff, including seasonal track which I was looking for! Downloading one of his seasonal tracks now to see how it looks.

What kind of track is that, the ties look different being almost W shaped. Are they European?

**Well, I tried DL'ding a single seasonal tree of toxa-batoxa, it was listed at 45kb, well an hour later it is still downloading because it has an 83mb!! dependency. That is crazy. Asset deleted.**

His track is among many different 'TSM' tracks available made by various individuals. They're some of the best looking tracks out there. However, all the TSM track (except for a handful) are Russian gauge, which is 1,520mm, or 4 feet, 11 27/32 inches. However, Russian gauge was previously defined as 5 feet, or 1,524mm. The difference in gauge is noticeable when you put a standard gauge train on it, but the quality of the track is superior than a majority of standard gauge tracks available.

Getting back to trees
The trees in this shot are all st_rmm and malcs trees. This section of the route is very heavily forested and averages 44 fps on an i5 with a 1060 6gb.

He's using mesh libraries, so for one Tree the mesh is in the library so you need the whole mesh library just for one tree which as you have found is rather large. However the rest of the trees of a similar kind will use the same mesh library and be small downloads.

GTX 1060 is a great card so I would expect it to render well. I have a GTX860m, so I doubt it would be so. I was just about to swap my Asus G551jm for an Acer Helios 300 with a 1060 and i7 8th gen but after I ordered it I realized I was spending $1700 just to play a game! I cancelled the order once my brain kicked me in the pants.

Is your 1060 in a laptop or desktop?

Yep, they looked nice but I knew they were not North American. Too bad too, I would have used them. Thanks.

Jim_spb made some track which will work. They are similar to the TSM track but are 1435mm or standard gauge.

Yep, nice looking track, but not seasonal. I may use them for my next route which will be a 20s/30s logging and coal route.

Hi! Post #8 above. I am not seeing
st_rmm on the DLS. Is he somewhere else on the web or another author name? Thanks!

@forester1 - ST_RMM trees, author is rmm. All are on DLS. It's best to filter category flora and download anything above build 4.0. You may already have some installed.
@Chris750 - It's a desktop. i5 7600, 8gb ram, Asus ROG Strix GTX1060 6gb OC (108%) A nice T:ANE beast. Sorry for late reply, I didn't see your question til now :eek:
cheers

Tried to download some
toxa_batoxa. Forest splines or something? Anyway every one of them was faulty because the latest mesh library is missing something:

Assuming you have a very good graphics card and given the same number of trees, would you expect to get better frame rates from billboard trees or Speed Trees? More to the point on my routes is it better to use billboard trees or Speed Trees if I want to optimize the frame rates.

Ques about your ROG?

 Hello Graeme,

I see you have a ROG computer, how do you like it?

:( I plan to hangup my week kneed HP Envy with stupid integrated GPU for a ROG NVidia 4MG asap......

 I could get 6mg GPU, but it will kill the Battery, at least that's what I read from reviews which said, you'd need at least 2 power bricks to keep the battery alive.....if traveling away from Plugs........LOL

A nickle for you thoughts Sir........When you get a chance.....Thanks :D
