Really good routes?

This is somewhat vague and open to a ton of opinions.

For some people, their own route will be the best, while others will hate one route and perfer another.

So in summary what is one person's junk is another person's treasure.

I see. I wish I could make good routes, the ones I've made seriously suck.
But believe me, if my route-making skills were better, I would spend tons of time makin em.

Does anyone know of any small, realistic, switching routes available? I love switching.

Keep at it. It takes practice like anything else. I studied piano since I was 8 years old, and eventually became a concert pianist. I practiced every day for a minimum of 4 hours. When I was in college for music, I practiced for 6-8 hours a day 6 days a week.
Now I'm not saying you need to do this with Trainz to make a layout, but it takes practice, patience, and many failures to get the process down.

One of the things I find helpful is to download what appears to you to be a decent route. Go into Surveyor and navigate around as you observe how the other creator did things. When you're done, try your hand at some of their techniques. You'll find that it takes time, but it's worth it in the end. This is how I did it, and as time has gone one I have improved my techniques with my route building and now have gone back and revised many areas of my mega-route I've been working on for over 8 years.

I'll have to look around and show you some screen captures I've got showing different sections of my route taken over the past 8 years.

" ... realistic ... "

Depends what you mean by "realistic". It could mean "based on an existing yard or route"; or "fictitious but follows prototypical practice".

If the second, search the Download Station with "philskene" as the author. You will find seveal routes and many sessions for them.

If you want to see before you try, go here:

Take a look at the WM & B&O Mega Route Native Mode that's available on my site. It works well in TS2010, and TS12. Be sure to download the 'Native Mode' version. Click on my signature below.

If you are looking for some nice routes with sessions, try Checkrail.com.

"Apparently, won't work in TS12...." made in 2010 native mode, tested in a virgin copy of TS12, shows no errors or warnings in TS12, runs fine in TS12 here, what problem are you having with it? I keep hoping for bug reports, but if anyone is having problems they're too bashful to say anything so far.

Something Phil and I have agreed on for many years starting with MSTS, switching is fun, switching while AI traffic is running is INTENSE fun. It's okay switching cars in a yard or in and out of industry spurs all by yourself, but the challenge of doing it while trying to stay out of the way and avoid blocking the mainline while other trains are running past is how we get out big jollies. Old video from when I was first developing and testing Chicago Metro;

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBW_q52HCYQ

Makes the whole thing a lot more fun for me, I have to pick up two cars and run around to the back of the train to shove one car into a facing point spur, but I have a 10 minute window between AI trains to do the runaround and clear the mainline. :cool:

Before this gets buried, Chicago Metro 3 "Apparently, won't work in TS12...." is anyone else having trouble getting it or the sessions to run in TS2009 SP4, TS2010, or TS12? If so, what problems exactly? Specific KUIDs;

Chicago Metro 3,<kuid:522774:100015> - route
Chicago Metro 3 sparks 10,<kuid:522774:100012> - rapid transit (elevated subway) session.
chimet 3 40th 3020,<kuid:522774:100014> - diesel/steam route session for commuters, freight and switching

No problems here, Jim. I drive them all the time. :)

I was hoping this thread was going to spark some interest in route building instead of just which routes to drive. I guess not! :)
