Steamshots USA..Lets See Some Steam Shots..

Norm and the rest here, great looking pics, and I like Norm's Stone Block Retaining Wall high up on the cliff......Amazing art work.............

I can't take credit for the route, that is Jango's Donner Pass Winter and the stone work is a pretty accurate depiction of the stone work at the Cape Horn Promontory above the North Fork of the American River Canyon on the Donner Pass route.

In the 1880's and 90's it was a popular stopping place for photographs.

Note you can see one of the stonework retaining walls at the foot of the nearest telegraph pole.

Thanks, glad you like the shots! After working on summer/spring/fall routes for a while it's refreshing to finally work on a winter route again, although this is an older one so it's required a lot of updating.

On a frosty December evening, we catch train number 68, the eastbound Commodore Vanderbilt, behind J3a Hudson number 5449. With the delivery of more lightweight cars in 1939, the Commodore and other NYC top trains have begun receiving lightweight sleeping cars. With a mixed bag today of both heavyweight and lightweight equipment, we first catch the bullet-nosed Hudson on the outskirts of Sterling Falls, crossing Lynn avenue:

Now weaving through the maze of tracks at SF interlocking, 5449 gets the all clear on track 2 to proceed to Durant, where the engineer will pick up orders for the next block.

Later on, we catch the train further down the line on the outskirts of Oak Hill, having picked up new orders and crossed over to track 1. The long sixteen car consist leans into the sharp curve as 5449 is about to duck under the Market Avenue bridge.

Passing the Oak Hill depot now, the engineer of 5449 blasts the whistle as the train crosses Edbrook Road.

Receiving another all-clear, the engineer opens up the throttle as the Commodore Vanderbilt charges past a set of bracket signals and onward towards New York City.

Smyers, I always love your shots. You somehow manage to really get that c ramped, dirty, clustered feel of street running trackage in a big city. Keep up the good work dude!

Today we catch the Century again, this time passing by the NYC's "A" yard in Sterling Falls, and pacing the PRR mainline off to the left.

Passing the yard throat, the mainline jumps from two tracks to four tracks between Sterling Falls and Lakewood.

The Century gets the all-clear as the engineer throttles up after clearing the yard limits.

Just after passing the town line, the train hits the Valley Road crossing at track speed.

Finally, we leave the train as it hits the track pans halfway between Sterling Falls and Lakewood. Note the center guard rails to prevent the water scoop from lowering too early.

With the scoop lowered, 5446 takes a big drink on the fly as the train highballs towards Lakewood.

Later in the day, the photographer has set up shop down the line in Lakewood, where we catch the Water Level Limited with J3a 5438 in the lead as the train charges over the NKP diamonds and past the depot.
