A Bridge Too Far - Challenge to bridge builders.

No, not the movie but the Road/Rail bridge at Grafton NSW. Its the only one of its type in NSW and Australia. Originally a Bascule design in which both the rail & road decks were lifted to allow river traffic through.

Ive decided to build the Grafton to Casino section of the North Coast line and can either fudge up a bridge and start at South Grafton south of the Clarence River or start at Grafton city and dont do the river crossing.

Hopefully one of our talented bridge builders will take up the challenge. The route wont be finished for a few months so theres plenty of time.

There is plenty of data available on the www about the bridge.

I'm willing to give it a try but please keep in mind I've never made a bascule bridge. When they open parts of it sort of collapse on each other which will make animation more difficult. I have made complex animated bridges in the past (Strauss Heel & Trunion Bridges) but they are a bit different.

Make up a data package with pics and basic dimensions and e-mail it to me. My address should be in my profile. I'll gladly take a stab at it.

Got it, saved the pics, and took a peek. Looks do-able but I need a bit more info.

1. Overall length.
2. Length of the fixed spans (7 of them I think).
3. Length of the moveable span (which might be called a bascule span but doesn't look like one).
4. Height above the water.
5. Pics of the ends.
6. Info on the curve at one end.
7. How the tracks and roadway diverge at the ends.

Ive located a book on the bridge design and construction and the railway in the Grafton area which I have ordered - should get it in about a week or so. This should give us the information required.

I'll let you know via email when Ive got the info.

Thanks Pete for the planned extension south from Casino that continues your Northern Rivers series!!! Now I will just sit back and dream about its rail traffic possibilities for the next few months
