Are We Nerds?

Inn

Mr.Inn
I'm come to have a debate with myself. Am I a nerd? Does anyone on here have a good interesting life and do very well with the ladies? Or do we all face the same rejection on a daily basis and when were sad we go back to one thing that we love...

Trainz.

Trainz will never look at us that we are "ugly" or "cute" but it will always be there.. expect if it breaks and it causes us to become mad. But in the end we will always be there when we are happy or sad... I wish I could do the same with women but that is just not the case...

Trainz will never judge us depending on what grade we get on a test... Trainz will never pretend to be sick just to not date you..

*A Sad Inn*

haha i feel like this all the time! no one at school likes me so im the reject of the school :'(.
im agree with you, trains in general help me cheer up when im feeling sad:D

Don't make Trainz (or trains) your life. You need a well rounded life to not be considered a nerd. When you start talking about the pros and cons of narrow gauge vs. standard gauge with your girlfriend, you've probably lost her attention.

It's a great hobby, but I'm the lone railfan in the family. And work (which is crazy considering where I work), and when I was in school.
It can be annoying when you see that cool new loco just off from the road, and no one knows/wants to know anything about it, so you have to bite your tongue.
But, I do have a special lady in my life, and many friends.
Not bad for a nerdy railfan/baseball fan/golf enthusiast. Just don't hang around me for too long, or I might put you in a coma.

"I'm come to have a debate with myself."
Let me know who wins. :hehe:
"Am I a nerd?"
IMO anyone who gives a rat's rump what other people think is a dork, that includes high school cliques. Being a nerd ain't a bad thing.

I never had a day's luck with women, married twice and both of them cleaned out my bank accounts before they left. The second one didn't take the kid with her so I ended up raising him alone, now he's a Train nut and plays a lot of other computer games. Altho he's popular with the girls because he's so cute, he's autistic so he don't have any really close girlfriends.

Anyway my oldest grandaughter is pregnant, which means I'm gonna be a great-grandfather next summer, which means I'm a bit too old to be chasing girls since I can't run fast enough anyway. :'( Funny part is I've been single for over 20 years now, but I have a "She Who Must Be Obeyed" anyway, my youngest granddaughter Her Royal Highness Princess Angel.

Nerd here, big time, and always will be. As for the ladies... I committed social suicide (getting married) a few years ago. There are ladies out there that will put up with your "problem" (being a train nut). I'm sure you will find one when you are not looking for her. If I were you I would enjoy the fact that you can still make your own choices, you still have your own money, and from time to time you're right about stuff. This is something that will go away when you meet the "one". No more money, no more choices, and you certainly will never be right about anything ever again!....

It's not really that bad, marriage has turned out to be quite amusing.

Most of all, who cares if you are a nerd. As long as you are happy doing what you do, then do it. Let the rest of them eat cake.

Mike

I'm not really what you call a nerd... im 13 ATM and i can socialise and talk to people (that includes girls) well without boring them.
as for trainz its a great thing to come home to.

yes:) :) :) some people i can relate to. people can call us nerds and reject us in school all they want but when we create a big subway or railroad system one day then all you will see how fast our life change when comes down to the way were being treated.

Dave,

We're not nerds. If having a hobby is nerdy, then Football players, Cheerleaders, so on and so fourth, they are all technically nerds by defenition! I do carry an interesting life; I'm part of the Local Fire Department, I have had the fortunes to be a good bowler (Another social suicide) and have thrown a 300 game. If something you love makes you a nerd, so be it, because I will not hesitate to announce my nerdiness because I love this, Trains in reallife, and most of all, life itself. There is a limit, yes, but you cannot let others influence you, your life, or your decisions. I have a Girlfriend, whom I love, with all my heart, whom I would like to spend the rest of my life with. I have been fortunate enough to meet her, and have her love me back, Trains, Bowling, and Firefighting included. All those to some people may be to nerdy, to much, but she has not a problem with them. If someone cannot love you for the things you love, they don't deserve you. I'm not the smartest person around, she doesn't mind. Dave, there are 3.5 Billion people in the world, and there is one that is here, just for you. Go find her bud, she's looking for you.

Just my .02

Keep on Trainzin Dave, you're time will come, untill then, I hear some bells tollin

Nope never had any issues really. People found it rather interesting, something new or different from what all of their other friends had in an interest. Albeit its not easy finding anyone in person to share the train enthusiasm I have, its always something to fall back on when I have nothing to do. I've never been known as a nerd, I guess because I'm not exactly socially awkward(assuming thats a major attribute to nerdyness. I do have foot in mouth syndrome from time to time). Friends have called me an intellect though before. Most people aren't nerds I would say its a less intelligent person's way of saying they're just smart or intelligent. And I don't think Trainz or trains have any effect on the intellect of any person. Just my opinion anyways. Like other people say, dont worry about not finding a girlfriend or date right off the bat. I came across someone that thought the fact I liked trains was cute lol. Thats a rarity I guess lol.

To answer your question, yes, I think we must be nerds. I don't think it depends on whether you are successful with the ladies or not. It's more down to the fact that Trainz is such a dodgy program with its ad hoc rules, incompatibilities and broken bits that only a nerd would invest the time and talent needed to make it work properly. In our defence, I would say that it is more balanced nerdism than say, stamp collecting or Star Trek. That's because you need to deal with such a wide range of things; physics, history, art, mechanics, computer graphics etc, and if you use the forum, human relations, diplomacy, the ability to scream silently and impeccable writing skills.

My nephew's wife was a train driver until they had kids.. Before they were married he jokingly said to her "If you get a train driving job I'll marry you". She took him up on the offer!

I don't think we are nerds. I think we are railfans with a passion to recreate the world of railroads as we see it. We will and I repeat will never, ever, become nerds.

I'm a nerd but a relatively high-functioning one, and able to lead a (mostly) productive life. I had the very good sense to marry an intelligent and kind girl about 20 years ago who has developed into a cooking nerd. I have also recently co-opted her into one of my summer-nerd areas - sailing.

Life is good.

We might get the "girls" but we never get the hot ones..

Sorry.. if you believe your gf/wife is "amazing" but how would society rate them?

I go to college and I've hooked up with a few girls.. but there not amazing. Fact most of them r ugly, but I'm ugly too so I guess thats the best I can do..

highly offensive to me!

I much prefer the term "nurd".

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nurd

I think I prefer definition 1

I guess I grew up liking trains, but realised quite quickly (well before high school) that it really wasn't cool, so I kept it to myself until my early twenties. By that time I had met my wife (who worked for BR and Virgin for a time), and I resumed my interest, much to her bemusement. She tolerates my hobby (which really only manifests itself in playing Trainz) so long as it doesn't take over. It's not something I hide from my friends, but it's not some thing I volunteer either - most of them know about it now, as my wife 'outed' me at a recent get-together. I don't think anyone thinks less of me...

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Everyone has nerdy tendancies. For me it's Trainz and Flight Sim X...what can I say? I also do lots of other not so nerdy things like snowboarding, rock climbing, search and rescue, and I run heavy equipment.

Embrace your inner nerd and don't be afraid to show it!

ps...I'm married and my wife thinks I'm a huge nerd...
