The Absolute BEST LOOKING Track?

I know I'll probably get a ton of opinions on this subject, but what is the best looking track to use in '06? (for US standard)

Absolutely a great thread...I still use MP Wood and MP Rusty...not thrilling, but detailed enough, and easy for other downloaders to find.

I used the VMD-US mainline Old/Dark, but the rail tiedowns look kinda European.

I am particularly concerned about bad framerates, in complex yard throats, using High Poly tracks. Several extremely detailed tracks hosted on USLW are absolutely awesome, with weathering, tie plates, and spikes ! These are perfect, and work very well for simple, single and double tracked routes.

Probably one of gfisher's tracks.

Yep - imho George's 132lb wood track available from USLW takes the prize for best looking. This screen is too big outside the Screenshots forum, so just a link....

It comes in 'standard', jointed, and superelevated versions. There is also a 'standard' concrete sleepered variation. Watch out for the polys though - on anything more than a bucolic branch line this track will bring your route to a standstill!

Andy ;)

Wow! When I first opened the image, I thought it was a photograph of a prototype track and train. Nice work!
Where do I get that track?
Can you get "real" switches to match, or just using the standard TS junctions?

I use one of Betriebsleiter tracks. In the right light the rails seems to have a shine. Also the dark ballast has a coal dirt type of texture to it.

Look in the photo section.

Most of the other tracks mentioned here are really nice looking track, but if you try to use then for a major yard it slows your computer down to a crawl.
For looks vrs performance the MP Wood track is the best.

If I may ask, which track would you suggest for a yard that gives the best performance and also for a main line?

GFisher-Five stars !

I agree that these are the top notch track...but what am I doing wrong ? When I use it I get semicircular swirls when looking down the track at any angle.

Try swapping Open GL - DirectX or vica-versa in 'Configure Trainz ' from the opening screen...

Track-Detail vs Framerates

OK...I layed a 1 mile long 16 track yard using VMD-US Mainline Old/Dark track (My favorite). The framerates were absolutely crawling !

I switched it to MP Wood and the framerates are super great, 1000 times better !
MP Rusty is also working great.

What is a good track, framerate wise, that also looks detailed and weathered, comparable to MP Wood ?
It's no great wonder, that alot of the huge great route out there use MP Wood and MP Rusty.

I'll have to check out the "Loops" route by GFisher to see what type of track he used. His route absolutely slays a PC, it is one GREAT route.

1000 Meters = 0.62137 Miles = 3281 Feet
1609 Meters = 1 Mile = 5280 Feet
720 Meters = 0.44739 Miles = 2362 Feet

I used MP-Track wood on The Loops. It has very good performance because it is a chunky mesh track and has something like 2 polys per length segment. The shape of the track is not modeled but set by a string of numbers that Trainz interprets. All chunky mesh track should be about the same in performance, varying only a little depending on the sizes of the texture files. The US Mainline track is modeled in gmax, and would necessarily have a minimum of 18 or 20 polys per length segment, so it is a little worse from a performance point of view, although it looks very nice in my opinion.

Once you start to model the rail profile and the ties in 3d the polys add up fast, worth it I think for some uses, but not too good for large yards.

(The Loops runs smooth as silk with every slider maxed on my new computer.)

Which is what I find so weird George... with the specs in my signature compared to yours which I asked via PM a while back, I'm surprised I don't get better frame rates! Weird's all... I'm getting between 17 and 24 in #2 camera mode.

I have been lately using Slave-Drivers track found on USLW.
Very good looking, could kill some low end computers though, the way I use it. :p

Cheers,
Adam

Slave-Driver has a chunky-mesh version of most (all?) of his tracks. they look great except perhaps in extreme close-up and have virtually nil impact on framerates...

Andy :)

Attention: "I need a Vote for best looking low poly track".

OK...I have a deadline to meet...By the end of November 2009 I plan to release the PRR Horseshoe Curve route to the commmunity.

Track is my upmost concern...I must choose the best framerate track for this route, one that looks US & detailed with wood grain ties, spikes and tieplates. It also has to be compatable with points, frogs, fishplates and railjoiners that are commonly used in Trainz.

I have just about decided against VMD US Mainline Old/Dark. Also, super high poly tracks are out of the question. MB track is totally not the detailed style. I need a vote from all people: What type of track is easy for the community to aquire and download. What type of track would give good framerates and be highly detailed ? I have been experimenting with several quality tracks. I have almost decided against all "Greenery" track. I believe it is NS Old that is one of the top ones I am proposing using, and also several great looking chunky mesh tracks mentioned above.

If I don't get much input...I will be doing the route in MP Wood & MP Rusty. Concrete track is totally out of the question, as the track should be weathered and portray the 1920's era. The route is built in TRS2006 and may possibly work for TRS2004 users, and I hope for 09 users too ? The DEM Trainzbuild is 2.0, and the finished route config file says Trainzbuild 2.4

Please...Vote here for the absolute best looking track:

I spent much time with "Greenery" track, testing out the framerates with 30 track yards, multiple complex turnouts and interlockings, and they seemed to make things crawl...but they all looked great !

Looking for these for backwoods branchlines and industrial areas:
