Railroad Songs

Listening to an old song made me think of this. There's a wonderful thread here of movies with railroads in it, so why not songs? Here's a few I know.

Wabash Cannonball: (note: the cannonball was the freight. The Wabash passenger was the "Bluebird")

City of New Orleans: (filmed with MSTS) (sidenote: This is my FAVORITE train. Anyone know where I can find her?)

Wreck of the Old 97. (based on a true accident)

Long Black Train. (Filmed at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum)

Wreck of The Number Nine (also know the brave engineer)

I know 3 rail-type songs: -

Long Train Runnin' - The Doobie Brothers
The Loco-Motion - Kylie Minogue
I'm working on the railroad - unknown

In 1978 New Zealand Railways created a successful ad campaign for both passenger and railfreight. The songs were released on a 45rpm single called, "Songs of the Railway" which from my imperfect memory actually got to number 2 or 3 in the charts.

Says a lot about pre-corporatisation New Zealand, really.

Anyway, we'll see if I can remember some of them... the first one was about passenger travel.

Says a lot about me, too I suppose. Sad, innit?

"Ridin' High"

Woo, woo woo whooooo-oooo
For years and years to our pioneers, the long white cloud
Was from the funnels of the old steam trains
They're diesels now but the story's the same
Doing today what they've always done
Pullin' together they're making the country one

(Chorus) And we're rollin' rollin' rollin'
Till our hearts are overflowin'
Rollin' through this great green countryside
Ridin' ridin' high between the oceans and the sky
Ridin' down the mountains to the sea

So where do buses belong
In a Railways song
They ride the wide highway down
From Kaitaia to the Milford Sound
Carryin' on what the rail's begun
Drivin' together they're making the country one

*chorus*

There's a ship under way
Every night and day
On the long sea lanes
They're more than ferries
On the deep blue sea
They bridge the gap
Between you and me
On the Wellington to Picton run
Sailin' together they're making the country one

*chorus*

Singin' the song "rollin' rollin'"
Singin' the song "we're rollin'"
We're makin' the country one
Singin' the song the Railways have always sung
Let's pull together
We're makin' the country one

The other one, Railfreight, was wildly popular for some reason, using the tune of Rawhide (well before the Blues Brothers). Unfortunately I can only remember bits of it.

I've still got it in a box in storage back in New Zealand. Someone should digitise it and put on the web for posterity.

I suppose the cloud over the Land of the Long White Cloud might come from illegal substances these days? Don't know about railway advertising songs but Johnny Cash is always good for a railway song. "Ridin on the Cotton Belt" is a good one along with all his others. ;)

Pretty much gives away my age, but how about these.
Chattanooga Choo Choo by Glenn Miller from the early 40's,
Gandy Dancers' Ball by Frankie Laine from the early 50's.
On the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, from about 1946.
Sentimental Journey by Doris Day from about 1944.

Orange Blossom Special and Wabash Cannonball are good. I prefer Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, though. I've never heard Boxcar Willie.

Here's a couple I've heard...

"On the Atchisan, Topeka and the Santa Fe" from the movie "Harvey Girls"
"Sentimental Journey" (the Doris Day version)
"Chattanooga Choo-Choo" by Glen Miller
"Ben Dewberry" Another train crash song, written before the actual details of the crash were known. In actual fact, a kid put a railroad spike on the track to see the train smash it flat. The engine landed on its side and ruptured the crown sheet.

And here's some Flatt and Scruggs. Here's Lester Flatt on the Martha White show with a 7 year old Ricky Skaggs playing Foggy Mountain Special. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpHDdFL_SpQ&feature=related
And a double, "Hey Hey Hey" and "Flint Hill Special" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfB_Saky-6E

 Claude

I just checked back and noticed: Not only did Jimisham post while I was playing on YouTube, but he recommended most of the songs I did. Obviiously these are great songs. And I should spend less time playing on YouTube.
