Didn't they put an SP freight engine on all Amtrak trains going over Donner Pass in the winter?

epa, in your first shot with the SOO, DME, NS...where did you find those billboard trees?
The only thing I can think of is a SDP45 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/sho...aspx?id=145002 the difference from a SD45 is that it has a steam heating unit and a bigger fuel tank.
I've seen pictures of everything from a pair of SDP45s to an F unit to a pair of GPs leading Amtrak trains over the pass, at least in the first decade of service. I'd bet (since the amtrak units were able to provide steam heat/HEP) that they would just put whatever they had on hand at the time on the point and then send it over. It looks like the practice ended in the 80s since after the Superliners were put on the San Francisco Zephyr/California Zephyr it doesn't seem as if they did it.

They are called "T15 Derevo" or something of the sort. I got them with some JointedRail route dependency packs, but I think they are also on the DLS.

More SOO fun, this time in the form of GP40-2's on an autorack train.
