Considering the speeds that locomotive is known to achieve, the trailing observation car should at least have a large spoiler to keep it on the track... and, perhaps, green rear marker lights so they look red as it passes you (g) .

Well, I did consider this one but it is so much lower than the locomotive that it just didn't look right. :D It does have spoilers though.

A buff employee who hopped off at Boland's Landing before his report snapped this shot of the patriotic power for today's Cannonball sitting on #4 Track at Morris Park . Though the sky was looking a bit ominous, the extraboard crew still tied an American flag to the nose of Eng 258. Along with the 265, this crew favorite will lead the 14 car train from Hunterspoint Ave. all the way to Montauk, 115 miles away.

An hour or so later, P-Unit conversion 172 does the honors bringing the westbound deadhead down the Lower Montauk. Here, another buff has paid off the manager on duty at Fung-Wah Trading for a rooftop wedge shot of the train passing Bliss tower in Blissville.

As luck would have it, the skies cleared up and the same photographer got his shot of the day. Proudly displaying their American flag, the crew of the Cannonball leaves LIC Yard and heads for Hunterspoint Avenue station to pick up their first load of passengers. They'll be given the railroad and roar down the Mainline, then take the Central Branch before hopping onto the Montauk for the remainder of the trip. A slew of other east end trains await the green light to bring countless other Hamptons-goers to their destinations for this holiday weekend. Due to a last minute bad order, LIC Drill crew YPD-131 had to do a bit of rearranging before the train left, right on time.

Hope everybody had a happy and safe 4th of July!
