It's 1996, and today we're at Robert's Creek Siding, ID. Here comes a Utah Belt coal train lead by a AC44CW #4401, an SD60M, a C44-9W and another AC44CW, with dynamic brakes screaming.
Since this train is extremely heavy, the use of helpers going downgrade is necessary to maintain an optimal speed with dynamic brakes. SD45's and some SD50's are being used in helper service over many mountain passes, such as Solomon Pass and Bear Creek Pass.
An SD50 #3565, an SD60M and a C44-9W lead a manifest upgrade, in N8 of course! SD50's are seeing less and less runtime on the head end of freights nowadays.
Here comes the helper set, with the aforementioned SD50 in helper service and two more SD45's.
A returning helper set rolls by for Dechutes Junction, OR to couple onto the next train.
A grain train is seen in the distance.
More continued in the next post.
