The legendary "Demon" Clinchfield 311 has given a fresh makeover in the style of Steve Lerro. Here, on lease to the CRR from the Frisco, 311 hauls a caboose and some 55 ton coal cars out of a tunnel in a mountain pass alongside a river.

Late September, 1982. An early morning finds RPPX GP9 #2500 with a short train pausing for a moment alongside the long-silent N&W SD9 #2348 and its accompanying caboose, as the brakeman throws the switches ahead for the coal tipple. Coal traffic has declined in this part of Virginia, and the formerly busy line has slowly decreased in traffic. Now only mixed freights run, with stops at the coal tipples only as needed.
