The problem with updating the trees is that most are tree groups and SpeedTree groups don't work at all. I've messed with this on several routes and there doesn't seem to be any easy solution.

Another part of the problem is that the snow level is 2000 meters which puts the route right in the middle of the snow line, very confusing for the seasonal assets. The route looks better if you raise the snow level to 4000.

Note the seasonal trees that are confused about whether they should be snowy or not.

Replacing one of the groups with a single large SpeedTree.

The Auran generic conifer SpeedTree used throughout the route doesn't look all that good due to both the snow line issue and because it visibly changes shape at different, relatively close, LODs. Replacing that might help a bit, perhaps with one of mcguirel's generic conifers

A few last shots from HP-Trainz' Marias Route and DieCastGalore's Empire Builder train set.

I consider this one of the top ten greatest routes in Trainz even with the trees. Well worth the $ IMO http://www.hp-trainz.de/. (and now even better with the Great Northern Empire Builder)
