Is that the Seligman Sub? Certainly looks like it with the canyons. If so, that's awesome... if not, that's still awesome.*amazing screenshots removed*
I knew about the CZ occasionally being routed over Donner Pass, but had never heard about via Barstow before. I have seen pictures of the Eastbound Zephyr with a Cab-Forward for a helper on Donner Pass before. Thanks Jango, having a lot of fun with the route!
One little known fact about the WP has to do with the frequency of slides in the Feather River Canyon. During periods of line closures, freight traffic could be rerouted over a variety of different routes. The CZ, however, was a different story. The Western Pacific was committed to putting the CZ through from Salt Lake City to Oakland, regardless of what routing had to be taken. Normally, the WP was able to reroute the CZ over Donner for very brief periods of time while they worked to reopen the line. However, according to Art Lloyd, in one extreme case in 1952, the CZ was routed through Barstow on the ATSF, due to conditions on both the WP and the SP being too bad to put trains through reliably.
