Some from me today. A SOO SD60 leads an intermodal through the town of Golden Peak, and a UP coal train begins its ascend up Sherman Hill.

Matt

I've seen pictures of everything from a pair of SDP45s to an F unit to a pair of GPs leading Amtrak trains over the pass, at least in the first decade of service. I'd bet (since the amtrak units were able to provide steam heat/HEP) that they would just put whatever they had on hand at the time on the point and then send it over. It looks like the practice ended in the 80s since after the Superliners were put on the San Francisco Zephyr/California Zephyr it doesn't seem as if they did it.
