No, the prototype Acela was still called the Acela, although testing crews called it The Fat Pig. American Flyer is a model train company which used to be the biggest competitor to Lionel until being purchased by them in the 1960's

Actually it's the American Flyer, the prototype to the acela

You're both right and wrong. Initially "Acela" was going to be the name for all the services on the Northeast Corridor; "Acela Express" being the new high speed service using the American Flyer trainset. However due to confusion (between Acela Express, Acela Regional and Acela Commuter) Amtrak rebranded them so that the name Acela (and Acela Express) was only for the high speed train, and that the other corridor services would be Northeast Regional and Northeast Shuttle. Arguably the name of the physical trainset is still "American Flyer", but no one (not even Bombardier) calls it that.

Similarly the new NEC high speed train is currently called the "Avelia Liberty" but will likely be renamed Acela or Acela II.

"American Flyer" is also the name of (as mentioned) a model train company, a bicycle, an early streamlined pullman traincar, and an airline.

Here is a Popular Mechanics article on the American Flyer: https://books.google.com/books?id=R...BAB#v=onepage&q=Amtrak American Flyer&f=false

Yeah the new EMU will not be named Avelia Liberty but Acela xxxx as it’s copyrighted and is a property of Alstom. Avelia is the new range of TGV and liberty stands for the US. By exemple the new “TGV” in France is named Avelia Horizon ( same as the Liberty but with double deckers coaches )

Actually I doubt it will be called anything more than "Acela" as chances are they'll keep running the American Flyer trainsets alongside the Avelia Liberty ones for a while.
