Guide on how to set up Semaphores ?

I'm looking for some kind of a guide on how to set up semaphores so they will operate. This would be for a very basic set up for mostly long single track sections and siding , pre-electric mechanical semaphores.

I looked in the Wiki and didn't see how to get them to work.

I set them up in the same method I use for colored light signals.

Jointed Rail has the Hall semaphores which have the same numbering scheme as their colored light counterparts.

Type 04 = Absolute.
Type 05 = Advance or Permissive
Type 06 = Diverging
Type 08 = Interlocking.

I forgot one little detail to get them to operate. ..you have to put an engine on the track. OOPS !
