What's your favorite kind of horn?

Gotta agree with Todd on this one, steam whistles have got to be the tops!
If I was to choose airhorns, it'd probably be the Nathan K5LA just because that was what was on the GP38-2s in service on the LIRR, and they were tuned so they could put to to sleep. That baby would echo all over Long Island.

Personally I hate air horns...
But if I have to choose, its a Nathan K5LA, especally in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI3gBng_gks
Steam Whistles on the other hand, I especally like these:
  1. Japanese Steam Whistles: I personally think these are the best in the world! Very American sounding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29HhzDLpoXk
  2. Reading 6-Chime: Just because it was used on C&O 614 durring the Fall Foliage Specials of '96.
  3. British Whistles: Pretty self explanitory.
  4. Chinese 5-Chime: Sounds very American. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14RBuXS0b7s

Whenever I went on holiday to the States or Canada, I often lay awake in the evenings listening to the many types of diesel air-horns as trains passed in the night, especially when I was staying downtown near the railyards in the many cities I've visited, some of them had quite evocative sounds, I think my favourites are those by Nathan, and my current fave in Trainz is the B38-9 K5Hr24, superbly recreated by Dillon Hayward, on USLW....search here for those interested....http://www.uslw.net/downloads.php?action=view&id=187
It will always remind me of my trips across the pond, thanks for bringing back the fond memories Dillon....

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

 Hmmmm........ Where to begin...? :p As far as HORNS go, the K5LA is my favorite. Whistles? Well, the Southern Pacific 6 chime, such a classic whistle! Another is the Pennsylvania 3 chime. IMO the Pennsy 3 chime is the greatest sounding whistle I know of!!! And on a side note, I've always wondered what Casey Jones' whistle sounded like...... From what I've heard, very good, I just wish I could have heard it... And if you want to hear (what I believe is) a PRR 3 chime, look up the Durbin Rocket. Paddlesteamer.
Preferably the PS EmmyLou, at Echuca (Victoria/NSW border).
The largest gathering of paddlesteamers in the world today.

Ah, well if that's the case, then my favorite horn would have to be a Leslie Tyfon A-200. like the ones used on the early F units

As originated by Deisel:

"What's your favorite kind of horn? I'm talking about real life not in Trainz or MSTS.My favorite kind of hornsound is the K5LA Horn.I love it!:D It always puts me to sleep.:hehe:

There's no mention here that it 'should be' a train horn, however I submit to the desires of my fellow Trainzers, & will desist from going 'astray'.

Ummm, I like Train horns that sound exactly like the paddlesteamer
"PS EmmyLou"'s whistle.

I really do!. It's a neat sound.

And yes, I love steam loco horn sounds.
I started going to school on a steam train; between Marayong
(well the platform sign actually had "Marrayong" in those days) & Blacktown,
in the western suburbs of Sydney.
Marayong is the first stop on the Richmond line. That was back in 1949/50.

five chime nathan, when its in tune, which on the s.p. it almost never was.

although i kind of like the little bell sounding horn on the bart when i get to go down there and ride it. i'm not sure what/how much good it actually does, but it sounds pretty anyway.

=^^=

I agree!

Horns... blech.... :p

Now steam 'whistles', that's music to my ears. Especially the five-chimes that the D&RGW used on its narrow gauge locos. :) Go figure... ;)

Todd
