Tunnels & Digholes...

And this is why we need a better system:

Is it really too much to ask for a system that just opens up the portal itself? Looks like this will have to be black paint and leave the terrain in place.

It was always a trouble diging hole in TRS: or be tied to the grid with the traditional ones or try to "plug" the huge holes that are created

That looks like a 1x2 dighole when a 1x1 is all you should need. Any gaps are filled in with retaining or embankment splines and scenery rocks. As that is a single track you will find tunnel portals with embankments around it which cover the space very well.

Example
<kuid2:211025:20190:1> tunnel portal akarm4
<kuid2:211025:20165:1> tunnel portal 06
<kuid2:211025:20137:1> tunnel portal 04
<kuid:211025:20136> tunnel portal 03

With the new grid system having a resolution of 0.125 meters, maybe tiny digholes can be made to just open the actual entrance rather than make a huge hole.

It's 2 x 1x1 digholes as the portal straddles the grid sub border.
I'm aware of the various tips and tricks to disguise the hole and have used them with mixed success, along with different types of tunnel mouth. It is harder on a model railway route as you are constrained by space what you can do. James73 has some tunnel assets on the DLS which do slightly better but they are slightly over UK loading gauge which again on MR's means you can't get the clearance without resorting to silly gradients.

You just would have thought that 20 years in, the programmer(s) would have come up with a better method by now. Unless you're building a route in the plains or an old style 60's round and round layout you will almost invariably have to tunnel at some point.

You can offset digholes by using snapmode 2 which shifts it to align with centre of the 10 metre grid rather than the intersection, does come in handy at times for tunnels and often a must for turntables.

I will try that Malc. Presumably that's the Ctrl and movement function?

Ah yes, of course the problem with config edits is the asset may not display correctly for other users.

Anyhow I’ll grab the items you mention once live on the DLS and give it a go.

Thanks Malc.

FYI, the full solution is being worked on right now.

That's great news, thank you Tony.
Will this be for earlier version, well 19 anyway, or just 22?
