UK Colliery 4 wheel coal NG"Tubs"

Would anyone know if the above item exists among all the assets.

There is basic example of this narrow gauge wagon, but only as a component part, in "Old UK Coalmine 2" - K2:187586:2806:2. Searches also suggest a reference being made to "Coal Tub", somewhere among Border Reiver's posts but I haven't yet been able to locate that item.

Given that they were a very prominent component in any period UK colliery scene, am hoping I can locate same for WIP.

Many thanks.

John

Only thing on the DLS is a 18" gauge Minecar. build 1.3 though

Actual Tubs there are various types sizes and gauges depending on the age of the colliery and location, the above would be OK for oldish mines.

First Job I had was as an apprentice Mine Surveyor for the NCB.

Models but these might help as include basic diagrams

Down the page a bit is a picture of more or less what I can remember in older Pits.

John/Malc,

Thank you both. Your interest much appreciated.

I have photos from 1987 covering the basic 4 wheel coal tub, the slightly smaller man carrier and the explosive tub, plus single and twin bolster cars, all built to basically the same chassis dimensions. I judge their gauge to be 24".

Malc - the tubs in the photographs closely resemble those being loaded at the shaft head in your Sutton article. As you state, the design and gauge would have varied considerably between collieries and regions in the days before any central control. The Shapeway drawings are also useful. The Minecar version appears to be that which features in Old UK Coalmine, but as you say, it's 18" gauge and it's an Object Asset, which makes the thought of accurately placing about 40/50 pieces in an already very busy colliery scene, something of a non-starter. I was hoping for a rolling stock asset that I could simply place on NG24 track, but that may be one hope too many.

John - I will send a PM.

Again, many thanks.

Basically have a look at 17_5 and how they are made. There should be an animated set of wheels we can use if they're around and I suspect they are then building or resizing a top should be fairly quick.

Plans help when building and photos help as well especially on the texture side.

John, on the DLS, Shortline2 has an 18ng ore car and 18ng mine track to go with it. It's about the right size and look. The cars are operating railcars that you can place on the ng spline track.

<kuid2:77573:381803:2> 18inch MRT (3m) 35lbs. mine track - surface use
<kuid2:77573:102:1> 18inch ore car w/side dump (1 side)

Bob,

Many thanks for this - Yes, these assets would certainly fit the bill but searches so far suggest there isn't any suitable 18inch gauge motive power. I may come back to this but I want to first explore the 24inch gauge option. This gauge is more compatible with the larger 1.1/2 ton tubs that were in common use in the 1940/1960's and, there are a few suitable loco's. Notwithstanding, thank you for your help.

The tubs aren't quite UK style coal tubs but interesting.

edh6 has '2ft Bogie Open Wagon', <kuid:403746:657>, on the download station. It is able to unload and unload coal. Keep in mind that it has Norwegian couplers, which are used on the Ffestiniog Railway, South African Railway (SAR) narrow gauge, and edh6's 2ft gauge rolling stock.

These are 5 feet long and used in the mines so not quite the same thing but thanks for the thought.

There's an ironstone wagon on ING4Trainz that might be a suitable stand in, although those wagons posted by JAGG look like they fit the bill well.

When posting this enquiry back in July, I did not anticipate what was to follow.

The DLS now has a selection of circa 1945 -70, 24” gauge, UK colliery wagons, (search -“UK Coal Mining Tubs”). The range includes coal, man-rider, explosive and bolster tubs, all with appropriate coal, miner and pit-prop loading capability. They are modelled on prototype photographs and drawings. Arising from this same enquiry, we also now have some interesting additions to the range of GWR coaches – C10, C19 and E23 clerestories.

For this, thanks go to John Whelan, Christopher Sprague, and fellow members of the TCWWG. I wish I had their skills.

Thank you to others who responded to my query.

Having good documentation and knowledge helps enormously and besides the bit box had a few things lying around in it that could be adapted.

Thanks
