For TS19 there is a backups folder buried under TS19data.

Anyone care to explain what it is and how to recover.

Thanks John

Hiya John, sad to hear

a little behind the scene
When you open anything for edit, or work on a route or session
trainz makes a copy of what you work on in the Local/Editing directory
and in the Local/backups with the current date
Then for a route/session it puts a new dir with the changes you made

So yes you can restore your work, but its not really user friendly atm.
read here wiki, and the FAQ section of n3v
hope it helps GM

Consider an extra drive and backup software. Set the software to backup your TRS19 folder and your "build" folder (user data) every night at 2:00 AM.

Better yet - consider a full disk backup every night.

But to get up and running again follow G.M.'s advice above.

How to restore a corrupted route.

There are two ways.

1) Using file explorer in Windows, or the equivalent on the MAC, go into the backups folder and then the folder named for the date you want to restore from. The date-folder is named as TT-MM-DD

- Look for the file named kuid <space>user ID <space>number.tzarc_nnnnn

Example: kuid 124863 100932.tzarc_17819852

- Copy this file to the edit folder.
- Run a DBR and the route or session is restored.

The easier way is to use VMM's tzarchiver.

- Start up tzarchver.
- Open up File explorer and repeat the steps above to obtain the file to restore.
-Drag that .tzarc_nnnnn file on to the interface.

A folder is created which can be imported either by dragging and dropping into Content Manager, or by imported using the file menu.

TZArchiver and other nifty utilities can be downloaded from here:

Software - Trainz Romania (tapatalk.com)

I prefer the easy way.

Note: Tzarchiver exports the tzarc to the folder where it's run from, and there is no install required.

I use a little different approach. Each time I work on a route/session, either my own creations or routes from the DLS, I save the revised route/session on One Drive. Then whenever I am working again on that route/session and it gets screwed up I just import the last copy from One Drive.

Once a week I save my entire Local Data Folder to an external HD. I have used this approach for about 2 years and it has worked well for me; saving me several times from route editing that has gone amiss.

I also find One Drive a very simple way to copy a route/session to another copy of the game either one the same computer or another one.
