Anybody looking for maps for historical information (e.g. for UK railway routes) will know old-maps.co.uk is really useful and a subscription (to allow you to zoom in and avoid watermarks) was only GBP 9.99 per month.

Unfortunately old-maps.co.uk is CLOSING 31st October!

Does anyone know of useful alternatives?

I don't live in the UK anymore, in case a valid UK postcode is required for those alternatives.

https://maps.nls.uk/site-map.html National Library of Scotland includes England and Wales totally free

The Georeferenced ones are the best as you can scroll through all of them and you can zoom in plus you can overlay with a satellite image. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=13&lat=51.65910&lon=-3.61344&layers=168&b=1

OK. Thanks Malc (from me and all those others who have been abandoned by old-maps.co.uk after years on paying for a subs or otherwise).

I haven't checked out maps.nls.uk for years, but back then, I noticed lots of gaps in England & Wales. but they're probably filled now. I'll check it out. Georeferenced maps would certainly be an advantage too.

The UK must have (historical) heritage maps too somewhere. I'll look around.

Is the demise of old-maps.co.uk due to copyright issues with Ordnance Survey or just lack of income to maintain the service, I wonder.

Peter.
