Dead in the water with new clean installation of TRS19

MSGSapper

Trainz route developer
I recently re-built my entire Windows 10 computer system to include replacement of the motherboard, power supply, etc. As part of this re-building I did a clean install of a newly purchased Windows 10 (build 2004) OS. Before proceeding to install Trainz I made sure my re-built computer system was running smoothly. BTW I am an experienced computer system builder who has done this type thing a few times before.

I tried several clean installations of Trainz where I used my previous old game data which I had saved. All of these kept crashing or locked up. BTW I did follow to the letter instructions for migrating old data to a new Trainz installation. While TRS19 launched it would invariably lock up or crash at some point while in Surveyor. It is worth noting that even complete database re-builds crashed from time to time.

As a last resort I did a clean install of Trainz Plus (build 110491) after downloading the online installer for Trainz Plus SP2 with the intent of using only just the built-in stuff as a check on what was happening. BTW I made sure Norton AV was turned of during the installation process. No other data was used other then what was installed by the online installer during the game installation process. After configuring the game settings I did the following:

1. Clicked the Start button to launch TRS19.
2. Chose Kickstarter County 2 to edit in Surveyor.
3. While scrolling around TRS19 crashed to desktop repeatedly. The crashes appear to be happening during “Compiler Shading” based on what was being shown at top of the screen in white lettering while I was scrolling around. Sometimes the game would lock up or while attempting to load the route it would crash during during the "pre-caching" phase. This also happened when I chose Content Samples 1 to edit in Surveyor.

What is maddening is that my previous setup which was Trainz Plus SP1 that had been upgraded to SP2 had been stable on my old system.

I am using the same Video Graphics card I had before (Nvidia RTX 1080) and the latest Nvidia drivers.

As a result I am dead in the water right now and not able to produce any further content for Trainz or even work on my routes. Talk about frustrating!

I am not a novice at working with Trainz and dealing with its quirks as I have been with Trainz since almost the beginning. Generally, I have been able to overcome most problems because of my software engineering background but this one frankly has me stumped.

Below are screenshots of my settings.

Just some thoughts:

Roll back Nvidia driver to earlier version.
Check your bios settings, are memory settings very aggressive.
Do you have trouble with any other programs

Sorry to hear of your problems.

Looking at some of those they are DLC which I believe is not transferable in a folder from one build to another. You may have to download those again.

Also try windowed. This is an issue with some video cards as well.

And for performance overall, uncheck use PhysX.

Could the new update TRS19 have a conflict with the firmware of a few of these versions of Nvidia cards,, may be updating the firmware will fix the problem??
But i do think this problem started with SP1 , why because within my TRS19 i noticed that when i was in route editor moving around started to get sluggish and assets were taking longer to load , but in sessions it was all ok and loading fast and moving freely around the route ,, so because of this i believe the problem is with the last 2 SPacks,,

I noticed in the log reports in post #1 that they all have error code x00000050 where the Trainz Database (TAD) is trying to copy some files from an internet cache to your user data folder. A quick look around on Google didn't reveal anything obvious except that error code being associated with a BSOD. Obviously that's not the case here, but it does suggest something isn't right with file access.

Do you have any other programs that make significant use of video? Blender, Substance Painter, image editors and the like as an example.

TS19 SP2 does seem buggy to me. It will crash if you try to preview a broken asset even if that asset appears to be error free in CM. That's a PITA for content developers since you have to check for errors and warnings regardless of the asset status. TS10 has also CTD when I wasn't even using it. i.e. it just vanished while I was doing something else.

Somehow, you need to get hold of a pre SP2 version.

I run Trainz in windowed mode and have for years.
Vertical sync is set to half.
My entire installation is on an M.2 SSD.
Performance - much the same but:
Shadows - Ultra
Texture detail - normal

I have most of the developer stuff turned on except for debug render. Compatibility maximum.

"Somehow, you need to get hold of a pre SP2 version."
I really think they need to keep older versions available for download , I'm fed up of storing older versions so I can revert back, at 10gb a go , it takes up a lot of drive space.

My build number for Windows 10 Home is 19042.685 with no updates pending.
Installed on 8/9/2020
2004 looks odd.
Definitely turn all Performance options down to minimums.

I am happy to say I am back business once again (at least for the moment). Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

The problem stemmed from going from my old DVI graphics card cable to the new DisplayPort cable and where you had to hook it up. DisplayPort is new to me but required for using the newer 27 inch 240MHZ Asus gaming monitor, which I got as part of my new computer.

I was using the integrated graphics on the motherboard, and not the NVIDIA graphics card as I thought I was. Needless to say using Ultra settings with Integrated graphics doesn't work well and was the cause of all the crashes.

Just when you think you have learned what there is to know about building computers something you are not familiar with comes along to prove you wrong. On the plus side DisplayPort is pretty neat and much better then the old DVI I was using, and I love the new monitor. Now if Trainz would just go that high (it caps out at 144mhz at 1920x1080 in the settings).

The Trainz world was in trouble along side you. As a high quality, and prolific artist, your contributions are present in many of the better virtual rail systems published for Trainz. I have played (butchered) your Maine routes for years of pleasure. I also uploaded almost all of your asset production. Your disaster was, in a way, a disaster for me, and probably many other "trainzers".

Thanks for the kind words! I seem fine at the moment although after the last week of building a new system and getting it back to where I was on the old system I will be taking a couple of days off. I should be resuming Trainz some time later this week.

Hi.

This may or may not be of any help regarding the monitor resolution specs in trainz settings, but is worth a try to get yours corrected.

When I purchased my new 27inch Samsung Odyssey monitor 2560x1440 @ 240Hz, the settings still only showed 1920x1200 @ 60hz for my former monitor and no 2560x1440 @ 240 was listed when Trainz was loaded and the new monitor was connected. Now I tinkered with the tick box for full screen, I either unticked or ticked (not sure now which way it went now), closed Trainz completely down then restarted. I think I may have rebooted the pc too before restarting trainz. (Sorry about not being completely sure which way it went, but it was approx three months back now).

In settings the resolutions for 2560x1440 showed but at other Hz and not 240. However, the correct resolution and Hz, was at the very top of the list and not with the other 2560x1440 options near the bottom. So all was good.
Also double checked that the resolution is correct in the Nvidia Control Panel > Display - if you use a Nvidia card that is.

Thanks for this and it set me on the right path to resolving the issue. The problem here is that Trainz doesn't populate the settings drop box box correctly. When you look at the 1920 x1080 settings, which is what I use, you see this:

Monitor-Settings-SS1.jpg

As you can see there is no selection in that section for 1920x1080 240Mhz. However it is there, but all the way at the top of the drop down box as shown in the below screenshot:

Monitor-Settings-SS2.jpg

Why Trainz does not sort correctly the settings I have no idea but you can easily miss your setting because of this quirk. In any case now that I know what to look for, and the problem behind it, I can resolve this in future situations.

Thanks again!

Bob
