To the authors of objects and trains, if you upload your content to the DLS, also upload all the dependencies and if you can't, have your creations on your own web pages or wherever you have the dependencies hosted.

Yeah, I thought with the exception maybe of routes, nothing was supposed to be uploaded with unknown dependencies. I used to ask on the missing KUIDs thread, but I finally gave up and just started deleting them.

But what if the person is uploading from a version of Trainz that has the dependencies in the built-ins?

Sometimes I've been known to work with others for things like engine specs and not everything gets uploaded at the same time. Even when I upload a batch sometimes one asset will get rejected for yet another new error reason.

Then you get to the point where how do you tell if the dependency is available or not?

Occasionally a dependency is version 4.6 so if you are running the latest and greatest fine otherwise you have a missing dependency. Making content is hard enough without giving content creators a hard time especially things like rolling stock and locos.

yep, its a minefield. Its the most unappealing aspect of the game. NV3 really need to work out how they are going to manage it more efficiently , wonder how many people bail out when they encounter all these issues, games are just supposed to work , you buy then download and use, not download ( if you can do it without issues) and then spend days sorting out the missing deps, deleting, fixing rebuilding database, and then giving up when patience is finally exhausted.

From the example that I have put assets uploaded to the DLS in the first 16 days of January with unknown dependencies, most are from trains and objects from Eastern Europe.
The only unknown dependencies that I know where they are hosted are those of kuid: 96914 which are from http://steammachine.com/bdaneal/ngdl.htm

To the authors of trains and objects from Eastern Europe , with unknown dependencies:
Why not upload their trains and objects to their web pages?

Why does N3V support assets with unknown dependencies?

What N3V does do is send an email to the person who created the dependency and request it is uploaded to the DLS. With locos and rolling stock you have the option of replacing the dependency with something else or even sometimes just deleting the reference. Sometimes it is in the table at the bottom but is not actually required.

I understand the frustration of having unknown assets in routes. It seems like almost every time I've downloaded a route from the DLS it has so many unknown assets that I'm left with two options: either delete the route or spend lots of time redoing route so that I can use it.
Unfortunately I've unintentionally caused this same problem for other people. Every time I've uploaded a route I made to the DLS it has turned out to have unknown assets. I've discovered that that I have many assets in my own Trainz library that I've collected from different websites over the years that (1) aren't on the DLS, and (2) I don't know where I got them from. So even though I like making routes, I've stopped uploading them to the DLS.
I currently have three routes that I've completed that I would like to share, but I'm not going to upload them if they are going to cause headaches for other people. Is there an easy way to check to see if all of the assets that I used in these routes are available on the DLS?

If you list the dependencies, you can see what is "Installed from DLS". I hear everyone's sides on this, frustrated as both a downloader and someone who has been working at trying to develop a couple of routes over the years. I want to stick strictly to "Installed from DLS", but that built-in looks better, or that payware is closer to what I want, or, or.... It makes it very difficult to decide which way to go. There are a few developers that have done magnificent jobs with DLS only routes, but it is probably the supreme challenge to overcome the limitations on choice.

There is a thread for layouts with all assets are on the DLS. Given the choice between a layout with a couple of things missing from the DLS or no layout my personal preference would be upload it. People can always hit the delete missing assets button.
