Hit and Miss engine Spec

I am working on a basic Hit and miss locomotive and was wondering how make an engine speck that would work with an engine of this type (single large cylinder and no Brakes other than a week handbrake and Timing advance)? The timing advance could be handled with the dynamic same with the Handbrake but how would the config look with the single cylinder?
