A pair of borrowed straight 40s from Western Maryland help lead empties down the enormous grade on the Independence Grade's southern descent. Though the motors themselves are on the lesser grade - about a 2.2% - a portion of the back of the train remains on the steepest section, a 3.8%. The dynamics on these engines are getting a strong workout as they carefully navigate the twisting canyon downwards towards the Gauley River.

    Cheers,
    SM
