Default Harpers Ferry derailment Dec 21 2019

This is crazy. The Cumberland to Harpers Ferry Route is one of my favorites.

Thanks for the interesting video. Hopefully they will repair the Appalachian Trail, but I wonder where they can put a detour in the meantime. Hopefully by spring? Would be curious to hear if they say what caused the derail at that slow speed, or if it was going too fast on the sharp turn....

    Wow!

This is the time of year when things shift and move about with the cold weather. The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions have had a lot of ice and rain, which could have moved something out of alignment. All there needs to be is a slight kink on those rails, and the train will derail. If it isn't rail infrastructure, it could be a broken wheel, or something else that could have caused this including a brake system lockup, or stupidity on the crew's part by taking the curves too fast.

There are some clickable places and a bit of street view that you can poke around on.
