Designing a Route in TRS2019

If one is designing a route in TRS2019, is it wise to stay away from using assets marked "Installed, Payware" in Content Manager? Here are the assets I'm using that are so marked. I don't know what to do....

Well, since the builtin DLC route packages are marked as payware as are items included on the routes even if the same item is available on the DLS, that is a very good question. I would say that any item included as part of the 6 routes that are available are OK to use. Even if they are marked as payware. Users such as myself are just out of luck. I have the North American Edition that just has the Golden BC route and the JR rolling stock pack. But as long as you can say your route requires the full retail version in the description, I'm good with that and will just pass on it. Otherwise, you are limited to just items of the base install and the Kickstarter County 2 route.

Hi Dave --

It depends whether you intend sharing the route on the Download Station, or whether it is for your own personal use, or whether you intend submitting it to N3V as DLC.

If it's the second or third, it don't matter what dependencies you use in the route.

For the first -- hmm then it depends. You can either assume that all potential down loaders have installed all six routes or you can assume they haven't and that they have only the base installation.

With the layouts that I have have uploaded to the DLS I have worked on the second assumption. That is, I have only used assets that are in the base installation plus assets available from the DLS. That way the layouts will work for all those who have TRS19.

I guess I'm out of touch, but I wasn't aware you could submit a route as DLC. That's a new one on me.

IMHO, this route I'm working on, is the most gorgeous route I have even created. So much of it feels so "real" if you know what I mean.

Well, I'll think about what you guys have told me.

Thanks.

" ... I wasn't aware you could submit a route as DLC."

Wot!~? You didn't know? You can. Go to the N3V DLC pages. Lots and lots of routes. Small and large. Excellent and good.

The difficulty, of course, is assessing the "goodness" prior to purchase. It would make this considerably easier if the author would provide a detailed posting with details, images and possibly a video. I certainly do (for both freeware and DLC):

Very hard to avoid, particularly as there is no easy way to ascertain which route(s) some of the items are from. Are they from built in i.e. default or DLC content such as S&C or Mosti? There are some quite nice non-PBR terrain textures all prefixed TS12 but I suspect these come from one of the commercial projects but no idea which.

My simple and possibly blunt approach is that if I see something that looks like it could be useful, it goes in a route. I then make sure the route description includes the caveat that the downloader may need all or some of xx, yy routes. However I would not reference anything that isn't in a core '19 product or freely available on the DLS (which is why I haven't tried adding Murchison 2 to my '19 install even though that has some lovely assets).

Easy enough to find out what they came with, highlight, right click, list dependants.

Except in cases where the asset that came with the DLC is updated and a new version is on the DLS. The new version is safe to use.
