Got the Okay for a New Computer

Get over it
My wife of 50+ years brought to my attention a ad she saw for TS19 North American Edition for $40. I told her that I had already bought it for a cheaper price but my current system couldn't handle it so I needed a new computer. All she did was shake her head which to me, after 50+ years, means "whatever". After doing some research I'm looking at this system. All suggestions and recommendations will be appreciated.

Hi there, not too far from my spec which runs TRS19 very well indeed...

UserBenchmarks: Game 93%, Desk 94%, Work 82%
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 - 94.5%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1660-Ti - 93.8%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050-Ti - 38%
SSD: WDC WDS500G2B0B-00YS70 500GB (M2) - 117.9%

I have the 1050Ti installed to tun an extra monitor, but only for browsing and not gaming.

Start here https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

the GPU is the only relevant bit of the machine.

Going cheap but fast https://www.newegg.com/asus-geforce...s 2070&cm_re=asus_2070-_-14-126-313-_-Product $509 note Dell workstations have limited height for the video card.

https://www.dellrefurbished.com/com...is_type=235&filter_grade=14&filter_model=1769 $899 for T3610 with 16 gigs of memory. The above ASUS GPU fits. 6 core xeon performs reasonably well.

You need to upgrade to win 10 but that's either free or $30 if you google tomshardware.

I might drop in an SSD but they are reasonably cheap these days. Some of the off lease Dell workstations come with them.

Cheerio John

stouthm - Looks like a really good rig proposition to me!
The i7 8700k CPU/ Samsung 970 PCIe NVMe combo is excellent and in my experience, runs TRS19 exceptionally well.
The 1660Ti GPU is a good-value-for-money performer, but you could do even better with a much faster GPU (such as for example, an RTX 2070 Super, which become available next week for around US$499).
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-super-geforce-rtx-2070-super,6207.html

In any event, the current rig specs should assure fast, smooth graphics performance at high visual quality settings for most TRS19 routes and sessions.
Go for it (as long as you've correctly interpreted your wife of 50+ years head-shaking intentions/ meaning!)

Specs look OK to me but I would probably opt for a 2, or even 4TB, HDD. Maybe an additional SSD just for Trainz although I think Trainz runs fine on half decent HDDs. I assume the SSD M.2 is for Windows and other none Trainz stuff.

My interpretation of the headshake is ".. you just saved $5 on a game that needs a $1800 machine to run....".

Harley motorcycle riders have a saying "if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand". I think that works for Trainz as well.
