    Default Windows update problem

I know this is not really a Trainz problem but perhaps somebody here can help me. I have Windows 10 Home version 1809 OS build 17763.316. When I try to update it I keep getting the messages "There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later." and "2019-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4505056) -Error 0x80070002".

Does anybody know what this error code means and what might be the problem.

UPDATE I have just looked at the update history (why didn't I do this before?) and see that in fact the automatic Windows updates have failed since the 9th April and I didn't know about it.

I had exactly the same problem some time ago. It turned out my old installed CD burner software didn't meet windows security standards.

teddytoot - No guarantees, but running the DISM and scannow commands in administrative mode might help with this error (indicating missing or corrupted update files).

As always, proceed with extreme caution with OS updates and always back up your vital data files.

First thing to try is install the latest servicing stack from here https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4498353 which prepares for Updates as in fixes possible issues before updating and are usually manually available just before a cumulative update.

Error 0x80070002 is a pretty much generic code for won't install, can often be fixed by the windows update troubleshooter or stopping the Windows Update Service (Run services.msc as administrator) and deleting the contents of
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Then turn Windows Update Service back on again and either check for updates or download the latest cumulative update from MS and install it manually from here http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....px?q=KB4497934

Thanks for the help. I had installed the latest servicing stack and run as administrator but to no avail. Thanks Malc to your link for the manual download link. That did the trick. I shall now have to see what happens next time.
