    Default Turnout / Junction ?

Can anyone tell me why a Turnout / Junction is built like this
one blade is in between the tracks where you would expect it to be
but the other is on the outside of the of the track.
So if anything were to enter one of these one set of wheels would have to jump the track while the other goes around

The seem to be frequently used at Japanese Stations where they are set to a signal leaving the Station
The signal turns green and the point changes to allow the train through
I take it if it tries to leave under red it is derailed

Seen a thread on this somewhere else, general consensus was it's a derailer but no one actually had a definitive answer.

It comes by many names including "Trap Point" it is meant to totally derail (by hopping the wheelsets into a gravel bed) any train not authorized

It is not meant to merely guide a wheelset via a frog into the dirt … It is meant to totally screw up the wheelset nomenclature

Any operator that ran this derailer would be immediately fired for operator negligence, and never work for the RR ever again
