The holidays always provided an interesting challenge for passenger railroads, particularly before the war. Often bad or terrible weather, coupled with routinely high passenger traffic levels, resulted in both lengthy and numerous trains, and a snow-covered landscape in which to observe them. In this scene from December 1939, J3a Hudson number 5449 charges through the snow with all sixteen cars of the Commodore Vanderbilt, destined for New York City. Less than two hours into its run, the train will dash through the night along the Water Level Route via Buffalo, Albany, and the Hudson River valley.

Three 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type locomotives are almost done the quick check and maintenance, and getting fitted with cast iron pilots for the snow, the one farthest to the right was used for heavy passenger while the other two are used in heavy freight, but although the morning is sunny was also cold and snowy.
