Skype has had a number of changes recently which I and a number of others are uncomfortable with.
For VOIP or talking computer to computer or even smartphone to smartphone over the internet Linphone seems to work well and since it use open SIP standards it can communicate to other software packages.
For dialling out to conventional phones ie international calls BRIK www.letsBrik.co works fairly well. The sound quality subjectively is better than Skype.
I am aware of Google voice but it is not available everywhere.
