Trainz "Next" (TRS19) Official Announcement

Sounds get much better when you install a sound card into your computer
Approximately this:

Asus Xonar DS
I do not have any problems with sound, and without a sound card, really the sounds were not very ...

Will you lock the default routes that come with it again, preventing any updates, porting and editing?

To anyone that doesn't know, just make your own copy by editing the existing route (the route, not any sessions) and saving your own. Can you not make your own copies anymore? You can in TS12 so I would assume you can in T:ANE and the upcoming TRS19. The early access version of the game will be released in JULY for anyone who did not read their article. Also, the photo of the Rocky Mountaineer is just artwork and not an actual screenshot.

You... actually can't in T:ANE, hence me asking.

TS12 SP1 HF4 and up does not allow the editing of built-in or DLC content. This was due to some people illegally distributing the routes and content. We have requested a compromise to all us to edit the content locally, so to allow us to do as we did before, but not allow the content to be uploaded. Tony said at one point that N3V would look into doing something like that, but up until now we haven't raised the ire again; maybe now's the chance to do that before the code is fully locked down.

I too would love to be able to edit the built-in routes. We're all liked that and have enjoyed the editing and fiddling that was allowed in the past, and would like to enjoy this ability again.

the biggest issue with sound for me is the fact that so much of it is done by content creators who obviously have little idea of sound levels. Someone attached a bird song to a stump they made. A forest full of old stumps sounded like an utter cacophony and there are many more examples of this . it would be nice to be able to turn off all sounds apart from those made by engines and rolling stock ( although in the case of most diesels it would be nice to turn the engine noise down or off altogether...:)
i hope the new release is a great one, but its just that so many of us were worked up about TANE and then had a bad experience that we are wary of anything new.

One thing I did want to ask you Tony , will the new version take better advantage of Metal within the mac platform and which would be a better card to use with it, AMD or nvidia ? 4gb gtx 970 with TANE was worse performance than a 1gb 5770 and I cannot find anyone using the rx series cards on sierra or high sierra to work out if they are any improvement over a mac version of the gtx 680 with TANE or not.....

I totally agree. There have been many DLS assets where I have edited the config.txt files to remove sounds that were annoying to me. These days I usually just turn the sound off.

Another issue that seems to vex some users (but not me) is the lack of authenticity in the sounds that are often uploaded as a dependency of a locomotive. Now I, and I am sure this is also true for the majority of Trainz users, can (usually) tell the differences between the sounds of diesel, electric and steam locos. But beyond that I would not have a clue if a particular sound was from a Alco diesel or a GE diesel.

In any case this area is the responsibility of the individual asset creators, not N3V. Are they going to reject a perfectly well made loco simply because it uses the sound file from a different loco? Or reject a tree because it (perhaps unwisely) includes the sound file of a sparrow?

Can not believe that once again a new release is offered before previous Tane updates are completed. I seem to remember the same thing happening with all other versions. Time I woke up. Don't think things will be any better, Sorry but that's the way I feel.

Ive always offered people to help the ECML team if you read about the route in TANE. It has for many years just been myself but lucky enough to be able to pull off the shelf new sections. Anyone who would like to enhance the route for the users is most welcome if you are skilled and don't mind signing a NDA.

I'm just off on my travels looking after Deltic 55019 on her around Britain tour till September as I'm the one responsible in looking after her and driving, fitter etc so time building Trainz is rather slow this time of year.

Cheers

I have lost count of the number of times this false argument appears in these forums, and the number of times it has to be rebutted. While you are perfectly entitled to feel that way, the real world works quite differently.

I would be happy if I could simply rename the built-in assets. With 40,000 assets or so, a naming convention is essential to finding things, and for all practical purposes for me the built-in content is simply lost.

Just wait a few years to buy a copy. There will be updates and service packs and usually the price is lower as well and you can get a nice deal.

The sound issue is definitely one which needs to be addressed. I was going to post some thoughts on this, but that would bring this thread way off topic so I posted this in another thread.

Any chance of an update/redesign of the user interface for setting up sessions? Something genuinely intuitive and user-friendly? Too much to hope for? Maybe! :p

I now have acquired a fair bit of experience in creating session via the current "Edit Session" user interface and I have to say that it is not "too bad".

The Session Programming "language" is Icon based rather than text based and, as a result, lacks the features of a fully procedural text or script language but it has a much shorter learning curve and is, in many ways, more "user friendly".

Where I have the greatest difficulty is in the often totally different interfaces presented to you by each rule. This is a byproduct of a system where different users create the rules according to their needs and ideas - this is not a complaint by the way.

Meaning no disrespect, but for some that might work, but unfortunately for N3V, if everyone adopts that position, N3V will be out of business in a matter of months. (a year tops). In the 36+ years I've had computers, (since a 1982 Apple II Europlus) I've rarely came across "bug free software", out of the box.

You only need to look at some of the major software players in today market, as they are all issuing regular patches & updates. (some monthly). That's just a fact of life, so whether we like it or not, it's just the way the world spins.

To me, one of the biggest issues I have with Trainz at the moment is the locked built-in routes & locked DLC routes & content. I fully understand why N3V has gone down this track, to reduce piracy, etc, but it's at the expense of the genuine Trainz users that purchases each version and would really enjoy modifying and editing some of those locked built-in & DLC routes & sessions. I get most of my Trainz enjoyment out of editing & modifying routes/sessions.

Obviously there are some Trainzers who will not purchase DLC routes & sessions from N3V, because they are locked. Hopefully N3V can come up with some sort of middle ground where the built-in and DLC routes & sessions are editable, but they are also released in such a way where N3V still reduces the chances of them being "pirated". (I'm sure there's has to be some middle ground somewhere, where both parties are happy)!

My Trainz glass is still half full, so I'm quite optimistic that the next version of Trainz is going to be the best ever version launched out of the box. Most of Tane's major bugs have been sorted out, so I'd expect that TRS2019 (which will be a follow-on to Tane SP3's core engine, etc, but with new routes/sessions, & some new bells & whistles), will have less bugs to be sorted. Lets hope so...

Looking forward to the beta testing.

Cheers, Mac.

Glad to see a new version hit so many years later! Seeing how it's brought up so many times, yes, the sounds NEED a major update. But unlike those people, how about an even better solution. Add in a way to customize your sounds for trainz. And leave the old sounds as is, and as a added bonus, add in an option to use sounds from pre-trainz 04. And also, just a small note tony, maybe add in a better shadow option where shadows aren't so blocky.

This is a spurious argument which comes round every time and is almost akin to Stockholm Syndrome. Also appears to be a peculiar attribute of software purchasers.

You wouldn't keep buying a new car from a manufacturer who promised to fix the engine shutting itself off by the third recall, or that the fix to cure the engine fault now causes the lights not to work. You would demand a refund, the manufacturer/company would either be forced to pull up their bootstraps or go into (deserved) bankruptcy - and you would buy a car that worked properly from elsewhere/another make.

For cars, washing machines, toilet paper - yes, I would agree with you. With those products there is no shortage of suitable alternative manufacturers. Sims on the other hand are often a different story. Apart from the highly competitive "shooter" and related game markets, train sims are a very specialised niche market.

The vast majority of Trainz users are loyal to the product, if not the company. Sure there are alternatives around but if they were any good we would not see users posting "goodbye Trainz, good riddance, I am going off to <insert alternative train sim product name here>" then popping back in the forums a short time later.

I am certain that N3V are aware of all this but, risking another "spurious argument", they do not have the size or marketing clout of "Far Cry 5" etc to achieve everything that everyone wants at once. I am amused by the often contradictory demands that Trainz fans make on what they want to see in the next version and, of course, each individual fans expectations outweighs the expectations of all the others.
