Can anyone shed some light on the history of this whistle recording?

You've heard this whistle one way or another. It has its presence everywhere in media, from TV shows, movies, video games, you name it. The recording I'm talking about prominently appears in the original Rollercoaster Tycoon 2D games, Sid Meier's Railroads, and Thomas and the Magic Railroad. If you want to listen that particular whistle in Trainz, its on the DLS, name "American 10" by Gary Hoorn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS2IIbOTpLQ - the intro of Sid Meier's Railroads features the whistle I mentioned.

Any who has been around the place able to shed some light on the history behind the recording?

American 10 implies its a 4-6-0 engine?... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-6-0

Talk about your classic engine of history...
Heres the one at disney parks...

The sound clip you mention isn't the same probably, it would break law if it was, so they are all probably different, with similar engine whistles.
Or they are all from some CC recording made so long ago that its not protected anymore. (doubt that, it would be too low quality)

See if the whistle is in these videos.

Are you trying to find the exact recording or the engine that makes that whistle?

I was looking for information on that recording, especially if a whistle that sounded like what was in Sid Meier's intro was installed on any particular locomotive.

Heres one they blew exactly like the sid meyer video. For the answer to that, i think you'd need to contact sid meier, and since almost all content creators use stuff they can't prove its not protected content, they hope their sources, sources are good, and rarely they are, since its third party, , they have a receipt... so its all good. ... they rarely divulge their sources simply because it could identify major issues.

Good luck finding the match so you can sue sid once you identify the work is protected content. (j/k)
In the meantime, I will go find a real steam engine, ask teh engineer and crew if I can make some dolby 5.1 recordings of the engine, and set up a full 5 channel mic config around the engine, and record it, for free. Then release the audio files on the net secretly, and claim they are cc for free.
Then 6 years from now I will sue everyone for using it.

Nah, instead i'll just get a hobby, like model railroading.
