Understanding Railroad Signals

There are often questions in this forum about railroad signals. Here is a link to a 2006 article in Trains Magazine by Frank Bryan and Robert McGonigal titled "Railroad Signals - What they do, what they mean" which should be helpful to understanding the basics of them:

There is also a downloadable tutorial available in Adobe PDF format which I think you will find useful in placing your signals on your route. While it was made for model railroaders it is still very applicable to trainz. Here is the download link:

Here is a 2 minute YouTube video titled "Automatic Block Signalling":

Note: There are a lot of YouTube videos on the subject. Just enter the following search keywords to see them: "railroad signalling"

If you need a reference book then I would suggest the always excellent "Realistic Model Railroad Operation", Second Edition by Tony Koester, Here is where you can order it:

For those interested in signalling in the UK, there is Model Railway Signalling by C J Freezer, available from several sellers at a range of prices - I found it at £7-99 and £11-99, so worth doing some searching. NB I do not have this book so this is not a recommendation, but I have always found Cyril's books interesting and informative.
